Salman’s Maatrubhumi reworks climax before CBFC screening

Salman Khan's war drama has reportedly reworked its climax and his character arc to centre a peace message ahead of this week's CBFC screening.

Salman's Maatrubhumi reworks climax before CBFC screening

Salman Khan’s long-gestating war drama Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace has reportedly gone back under the scalpel once more. Ahead of its scheduled Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) screening this week, director Apoorva Lakhia and the writing team are said to have reworked the climax and adjusted Salman’s character arc so the ending lands on reconciliation rather than a conventional war-movie finish.

A softer ending for a sensitive subject

According to a Mid-Day report carried by The Times of India, the revised climax is intended to match the film’s evolving tone and its broader peace message. A source told the publication that the makers have been especially careful about how the India-China conflict is depicted on screen.

The production has already received a No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the report adds, and has now been submitted to the CBFC. The team is waiting for a screening date, and a viewing this week could finally bring some clarity on release plans.

How the film has evolved

The project began life as Battle of Galwan, built around the 2020 India-China clash in the Galwan Valley. Salman was reportedly attached to play Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu, an Indian Army officer who was part of the confrontation. As India-China relations shifted over the years, so did the film: the title changed, the treatment was reshot, and the focus moved towards a peace message.

That journey matters for fans because it tells us the film being certified is not the one announced years ago. It has been repeatedly reshaped by diplomacy as much as by drama.

Why this CBFC step is the one to watch

A CBFC review is rarely headline news, but this is the first public sign that the film may be nearing a release path. Here’s what this stage usually tells us:

  • The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting NoC is already in hand, so the film has cleared one government checkpoint.
  • A CBFC viewing can lead to a certification, which is needed before a release date is locked.
  • The reworked climax and character arc suggest the makers are trying to avoid another round of objections.

The production team did not comment when contacted by Mid-Day, so there is no official word yet on what the new ending changes or how much of Salman’s role was altered.

What else is on Salman’s slate

While Maatrubhumi inches towards certification, Salman is shooting Vamshi Paidipally’s action entertainer, tentatively titled Monster, with Nayanthara. Produced by Dil Raju under Sri Venkateswara Creations, that film is aiming for an Eid 2027 theatrical debut. He is also juggling Bigg Boss 20 hosting duties and is expected to move to his Raj & DK project towards the end of the year.

For now, the next real update for Maatrubhumi is the censor’s verdict. If the CBFC screening goes ahead this week, fans may finally get a sense of whether the film’s long road is heading towards a release date.
