How a Rose Led to 11 Karisma-Govinda Films

Before they made 11 films together, Karisma Kapoor was a Govinda fan standing backstage with a red rose. Revisiting the first meeting that built a 90s screen pairing.

How a rose led to 11 Karisma-Govinda films

Before Karisma Kapoor and Govinda became one of the 1990s’ most reliable screen pairs, their story began with a fan, a red rose and a question about becoming a heroine.

A fan moment before the film career

Karisma Kapoor has spoken about discovering Govinda well before she entered films. After watching Khudgarz (1987), she was hooked on the song ‘Aap Ke Aa Jane Se’ and told her parents she wanted to meet him for an autograph or a photo.

The meeting almost happened from the wings. She recalls standing backstage during a stage show, watching Govinda perform ‘Street Dancer’ with Neelam Kothari while he wore a gold outfit. In her memory, she was peeping through the curtains with a rose in hand, unable to believe she was seeing the stars dance in front of her.

The question that hinted at her future

When they finally met, Govinda asked whether she wanted to become a heroine. Karisma Kapoor said she answered shyly, and he told her she would become a big one. ‘Who knew that we would eventually work together!’ she said on the reunion episode. The recollection resurfaced from a 2024 appearance where the two marked 25 years of Hero No. 1.

An 11-film run, from Raja Babu to Shikari

That fan encounter turned into a long professional partnership. Their films leaned on comedy, romance and dance, and their timing became the draw.

  • 11 films together in all.
  • Known titles include Raja Babu, Andaz Apna Apna, Coolie No. 1 and Haseena Maan Jaayegi.
  • The last one, Shikari, released on October 6, 2000.

Why the story still lands

Nostalgia for 1990s Bollywood is not just about the films; it is about the off-screen origin stories that made the casting feel inevitable. Karisma Kapoor’s account works because it collapses the distance between fan and star. She was part of the audience before she became one of the names on the poster.

The rose matters because it turns a routine first meeting into a memory with a prop, a setting and a specific song. That is what makes it repeatable in interviews and reunion episodes, and why it adds texture to their 11-film run.

For viewers, it also offers an easy way back into the filmography: the films that followed were built on a rapport that started before the first take. There is no single best viewing order, but starting with the comedies before the outlier makes the pairing’s range easier to appreciate.
