Sigma box office: Rs 6.98 crore in 5 days, Day 5 dips 6%

Jason Sanjay's Sigma added Rs 79 lakh on Tuesday, taking its five-day India net total to Rs 6.98 crore. Telugu shows are leading the Tamil version.

Sigma at Rs 6.98 crore after 5 days; Day 5 dips 6%

Five days after its October 2 release, Sigma is settling into a weekday rhythm that feels more modest than its opening-day promise. The Tamil heist action comedy added Rs 79 lakh net in India on Tuesday, according to Sacnilk, taking its total to Rs 6.98 crore net. India gross stands at Rs 7.93 crore.

The film is the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay, son of Tamil star Vijay, and stars Sundeep Kishan as a radio jockey pulled into the underworld of gambling and illicit casinos. Reviews have been mixed, though Kishan’s performance has drawn praise. ETimes rated the film 2.5 stars out of 5.

The five-day trend

Sigma opened at Rs 2.35 crore, a solid start for a debut director with a famous surname. But the momentum has cooled quickly.

  • Day 1: Rs 2.35 crore from 1,813 shows, 31.1% occupancy
  • Day 2: Rs 1.50 crore from 1,802 shows, 22.6% occupancy
  • Day 3: Rs 1.50 crore from 1,753 shows, 23.6% occupancy
  • Day 4: Rs 84 lakh from 1,520 shows, 17.5% occupancy
  • Day 5: Rs 79 lakh from 1,439 shows, 17.5% occupancy

Tuesday’s number is only 6% lower than Monday’s, which is not a crash. But the sharp drop from opening day to the first Monday shows the film is playing like a curiosity-driven launch, not yet a word-of-mouth grower.

Telugu is carrying the day

On Day 5, the Telugu version collected Rs 44 lakh from 773 shows, while the Tamil version contributed Rs 35 lakh from 666 shows. Telugu occupancy was slightly higher at 18%, against 17% for Tamil.

Evening shows remain the soft spot for the Tamil version, with occupancy falling to 7.42% on Tuesday. That is the kind of dip that signals casual audiences are not yet turning up at prime time.

What Sigma is about

The film follows Guru, a radio host played by Sundeep Kishan, who is drowning in debts left by his father. With the family home on the line, he chases quick money and ends up in backdoor gambling and illicit casinos, the setup for a heist action comedy. It is a familiar pressure-cooker premise, and the film’s task is to make the desperation feel fun rather than grim.

Why this matters for filmi fans

Star-kid debuts arrive with built-in attention, but attention does not guarantee legs. Jason Sanjay has the goodwill of the Vijay fanbase, yet a 2.5-star critical response and sliding weekday occupancy mean Sigma needs strong word of mouth to hold its second weekend.

If you are curious about the film, the safest bet is to see it for Sundeep Kishan’s performance and the heist setup, but keep expectations in check. The box office story will become clearer when the second Friday numbers arrive.
