SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi adds a language ahead of April 7, 2027
Varanasi is adding a new language and ancient script for its time-travel cave sequence, going beyond Baahubali's Kiliki ahead of 2027.

SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi is shaping up to be more than a time-travel spectacle. The Times of India reports that the team has hired a linguistic expert to create a new language for the film, and it will surface inside a cave sequence where the characters encounter an ancient script.
The multilingual adventure, led by Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is set for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027. The narrative is expected to move from Varanasi to Antarctica, Africa and Ancient Rome before returning to its starting point.
From Kiliki to a full written language
Rajamouli has done this before. For Baahubali: The Beginning, he worked with lyricist and screenwriter Madhan Karky to build Kiliki, the language of the Kalakeya warriors who attack Mahishmati. But that language was mainly spoken, with only a brief written appearance.
Varanasi looks set to go further. Reports suggest the new language has both a spoken form and a detailed written script. In the sequence, the characters enter a cave, find the script on the walls, and then have to learn the language to uncover the mystery tied to the writings.
Why the script could be the real hook
A spoken language adds texture. A written script adds a puzzle. Once Varanasi gives its cave walls a visual alphabet or symbol system, fans can freeze frames, screenshot the clues and argue about their meaning. That is exactly the kind of detail that rewards a second watch.
So far, the reports tell us:
- A linguistic expert is crafting a new language and a detailed ancient script.
- The language appears in a time-travel sequence set inside a cave.
- The characters must learn the language to follow the story’s clues.
- Baahubali’s Kiliki was mostly spoken; Varanasi reportedly adds a written form.
- The film releases worldwide on April 7, 2027, in multiple languages.
What to watch until the first look drops
If you want to understand how Rajamouli uses an invented language as drama, revisit the Kalakeya invasion in Baahubali: The Beginning. Notice how the sound of Kiliki makes the warriors feel otherworldly before the subtitles explain them.
With Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kumbha, Varanasi has the star power for a multi-continent adventure. If the scripted cave language is central to the mystery, it could become one of 2027’s most rewatchable pieces of world-building.
