Dimple Kapadia Remembers Nana Patekar, From Prahaar to Welcome 2

Dimple Kapadia looks back at her bond with Nana Patekar, from Prahaar's intensity to Welcome 2's on-set pranks and the lessons she carried.

Dimple Kapadia Remembers Nana Patekar's Rare Warmth

What made Dimple Kapadia and Nana Patekar such an enduring pair? It wasn’t conventional chemistry. It was a mix of trust, instinct and a lot of off-camera mischief.

After Patekar’s passing, Kapadia spoke to Filmfare about what it was like to work with him. Their collaborations covered two registers:

  • Intense dramas: Prahaar and Krantiveer
  • Lighter comedies: Welcome 2 and Tum Milo Toh Sahi

The moment she couldn’t refuse

Kapadia says she was genuinely surprised when Patekar offered her a role in Prahaar, which he directed. “I was thinking what he saw in me? There were so many better actors than me,” she said. But he saw something, and the film became one of their most intense collaborations.

She described him as “all heart, all love,” even though he could try to intimidate a co-star. The trick, she said, was to take it in your stride.

A push toward raw emotion

One Prahaar scene stayed with her. Her character’s daughter is molested on screen, and Patekar wanted a huge emotional reaction. He asked her to imagine a personally violent experience to reach that place.

“I just let loose,” she remembered. Patekar was thrilled when he got the shot he wanted.

Pranks, timing and a straight face

Off camera, they were relentless practical jokers. On one shoot, Patekar had told everyone to arrive on time. That day, he came late. Kapadia kept a straight face, delivered a mock lecture about how male actors can get away with anything while women would be called out, and pretended to be angry all day.

Later, she had a good laugh.

The Welcome 2 ‘pack up’ moment

During Welcome 2, a desert sequence had Kapadia delivering a parting line that was clearly not subtle. Patekar was inside a tent, listening on the monitor. He yelled, removed his tie in disgust and said something like, “Pack up, yeh koi dialogue hai?” Kapadia believes he was really irritated with the director and let off steam on her behalf. She still laughs at the memory.

Why their pairing still matters

For Hindi film fans, Dimple and Nana weren’t just co-stars. They represented a kind of on-screen trust that is hard to fake. Their work together had weight because their off-screen equation was built on respect, honesty and the freedom to joke.

In Kapadia’s words: “Aise actors kam hi milte hai life mein.” It’s a tribute, and a reminder not to take rare performers for granted.
