Ranabaali trailer: Vijay Deverakonda as folk-hero rebel
The first trailer for Rahul Sankrityan's period drama sets Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna amid the Great Madras Famine of 1876-78, with a theatrical release on October 16.

Vijay Deverakonda is stepping into a legend. The first full trailer for Ranabaali arrived Thursday evening, and it positions the actor as a folk hero born out of hunger, colonial cruelty and rural memory. The 3-minute-56-second look is directed by Rahul Sankrityan and builds toward the film’s October 16 theatrical release.
A folktale that turns into a fight
The trailer begins with a village performance that celebrates Ranabaali of Singanamala Hill. In the story being passed down, a woman gave birth to him in a cave years ago, and a prophecy says greatness is in his destiny. From there, the film shifts to a South Indian village under British rule, where wages are promised but the people are treated harshly instead.
Deverakonda’s Ranabaali grows angrier at why the British hold power over his village at all. Rashmika Mandanna plays Jayamma, his wife. The trailer makes room for their home life too, including a lighter moment in which Jayamma’s mother-in-law asks her to provide an heir soon.
A period drama with a real wound behind it
The story is set against the Great Madras Famine of 1876-78, which devastated Rayalaseema. The film does not present itself as a biopic of one documented rebel. Instead, it is a fictional story shaped by the memory of people who resisted and endured, and whose accounts survived through oral history and folklore.
Arnold Vosloo appears as Sir Theodore Hector, the British colonial antagonist, giving the conflict a clear face. The framing is both personal and political: as the famine closes in, Ranabaali takes it upon himself to protect his people. For Deverakonda, this is a shift into territory where image and legacy matter as much as action, while Mandanna plays a partner at home and a witness to the rebellion.
The final stretch of the trailer reaches for the heightened, folk-rooted imagery that has worked for titles such as Kantara, Pushpa and Karuppu.
