Katrina Kaif: Nobody Else Is Responsible for Your Happiness

Katrina Kaif's old Koffee With Karan reflections on self-worth, singlehood and love explain why she now calls happiness a personal job.

Katrina Kaif: Own Your Happiness, Not Your Partner

Years before she married Vicky Kaushal and became a parent, Katrina Kaif had already figured out the relationship rule most people learn only after a lot of heartbreak: your happiness is not your partner’s job.

It is an old comment, but the throwback from a 2018 episode of Koffee With Karan Season 6 is making the rounds again, and it still sounds like the advice a friend gives you when you insist on overthinking a situationship.

The line that keeps resurfacing

Speaking to Karan Johar, Katrina looked back at her past relationships, including her much-talked-about links with Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor. She distilled everything into one phrase.

Nobody else is responsible for your happiness.

That was her biggest learning. Her reasoning was practical: if you hand over your self-worth to another person, you are asking them to carry a weight nobody can hold forever.

Why it matters beyond the gossip

Katrina described a cycle many fans will recognize. When a relationship is going well, you feel great about yourself. When it goes through a rough patch, your self-image takes a beating. She said she had spent a long time judging herself by how much love or attention she received from a partner, and she did not think that was healthy.

The shift, she explained, starts with seeing singlehood differently. She rejected the idea that being single means something is missing, saying that was not true for her. Instead, she was becoming more comfortable with who she was.

A useful check before you overthink

If you want to apply the Katrina standard, ask a few honest questions:

  • Does your mood mainly rise and fall with your partner’s attention?
  • Do you feel less like yourself when the relationship hits a rough patch?
  • Are you showing up from want, not from need?

Her idea of a beautiful relationship was not dramatic need. She described love built on admiration, respect, companionship and, in her words, “a space of ease.”

Where life has taken her since

Katrina married Vicky Kaushal in December 2021. In November 2025, they welcomed their son, Vihaan. The couple has kept their family life mostly private, and this throwback does not pretend to reveal anything new about it. It does explain the grounded energy she has carried in recent years.

For the rest of us, the takeaway is simple: protect your own happiness before you invite someone to share it.
