Imran Khan Detained At Mumbai Protest As Police Hold 400+
Imran Khan and Lekha Washington were detained at August Kranti Maidan on Saturday. Police say more than 400 people were held in Mumbai.

Imran Khan’s weekend took a surprising detour on Saturday when Mumbai Police detained him at August Kranti Maidan, the proposed site of a protest in support of the Cockroach Janta Party. His partner, actor Lekha Washington, was detained alongside him.
Khan quickly turned the moment into a social-media talking point, posting a photograph from what looked like a police van with the dry caption, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.” Washington posted a video from the same vehicle, asking friends to follow the location pin she was sending because she did not know where they were being taken.
‘I am here as a citizen’
Speaking to reporters, Khan said he had not arrived with a list of demands. He described himself as a Mumbai resident who wanted to ask why movement was being restricted and why people’s voices were being suppressed.
“I don’t have demands. I am here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city.”
He also clarified that he was not part of any organisation and was participating on his own.
The bigger picture
The detention was not isolated. Mumbai Police said more than 400 people were detained at August Kranti Maidan, according to an ANI report. In Delhi, police sources said around 1,000 protesters were held as they attempted to march towards Jantar Mantar for a CJP-led protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
- Detained: Imran Khan and Lekha Washington, Saturday at August Kranti Maidan
- Mumbai Police figure: more than 400 people held at the ground
- Delhi Police sources: around 1,000 protesters detained
- Khan’s position: no demands, no organisation, present as a citizen
For fans, the episode lands differently because Khan has been vocal before. In July 2026 he reacted sharply to an alleged lathi charge on student protesters, writing that the system meant to protect students had failed them and asking, “Are these not the children of Mother India?”
The filmi connection
His cousin, actor Zayn Khan, posted a playful video from the protest site, pointing out that Imran Khan’s debut film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na also featured a police arrest scene. The parallel gave the news a lighter, filmi framing even as supporters gathered outside the local police station.
What’s next on screen
Khan had recently returned to acting with a cameo in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, which released in theatres on January 16, 2026, and began streaming on Netflix on April 1. His upcoming Netflix romantic comedy Adhure Hum Adhure Tum, directed by Danish Aslam and co-starring Bhumi Pednekar and Gurfateh Pirzada, is now targeting December 18, 2026, after a reported delay.
