Amitabh Bachchan’s 17 Filmfare Wins: A Birthday Look Back

On his birthday, revisit Amitabh Bachchan's 17 Filmfare honours—12 acting trophies plus special awards—from Anand to Gulabo Sitabo.

Amitabh Bachchan's 17 Filmfare Wins, From Anand to Gulabo Sitabo

On Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday, the best gift for a filmi fan might be a walk through his Filmfare shelf. Few actors stay in the awards conversation this long, and fewer still do it by moving through supporting roles, superstardom and late-career character parts.

First, the support act

The run began with Anand (1971), where Bachchan played the concerned doctor to Rajesh Khanna’s titular character. That performance took Best Supporting Actor and set a template: even opposite the reigning star, he could hold the screen with restraint.

He repeated the trick in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Namak Haraam, again sharing the frame with Khanna. The awards were already telling the story of an actor making his presence felt before he owned the screen.

The leading-man years

Manmohan Desai’s Amar Akbar Anthony delivered his first Best Actor trophy, with Anthony standing out for both comic timing and emotion. Don brought another Best Actor win in 1979, its double role played sharply enough to feel like two actors. Then Hum won him Best Actor at the 37th Filmfare Awards, as he moved from a ferocious Tiger to a meek patriarch with equal conviction.

By this point the trophies reflected the audience’s idea of Bachchan: someone who did not just support a film, but carried it.

The reinvention circuit

After the quieter patch, Mohabbatein arrived at the 46th Filmfare Awards as a comeback moment, earning Best Supporting Actor opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Aks followed with Best Actor (Critics) at the 47th, signalling that both the industry and reviewers were paying attention.

Black then doubled up at the 51st Filmfare Awards, taking Best Actor and Best Actor (Critics). Paa brought his fifth Best Actor win, with Bachchan near 70 playing a 12-year-old with progeria. Piku and Gulabo Sitabo kept the run alive with Best Actor (Critics), turning late-career gambles into trophy moments.

The special honours at a glance

Beyond the acting races, Filmfare has marked his milestones separately:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award – 1991
  • Superstar of the Millennium – 45th Filmfare Awards, 2000
  • Filmfare Power Award – jointly with Shah Rukh Khan, 49th Filmfare Awards
  • Filmfare Special Award – for 40 years in the industry, 56th Filmfare Awards, 2011
  • Honorary Cine Icons of Indian Cinema – with Jaya Bachchan, for the 1970s, 70th Filmfare Awards

Why this résumé matters

For Hindi film fans, the list is more than trivia. It maps Bollywood’s own changes: the rise of a leading man, the multi-starrer era, the comeback decade and the current appetite for actor-first parts.

If you are planning a birthday watchlist, start with Anand and Don to see the becoming, then land on Paa, Piku and Gulabo Sitabo to see the range. It is a rare Filmfare arc that moves from reliable presence to the whole story.
