Ektaa Kapoor confirms The Dirty Picture 2 after 15 years
Ektaa Kapoor confirms The Dirty Picture 2 is in the works 15 years after the original. It will follow one person's story; cast and lead are still secret.

Producer Ektaa Kapoor has confirmed that The Dirty Picture 2 is in the works, fifteen years after the original released in cinemas. Speaking on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Kapoor said she had been thinking about the sequel for some time and is moving ahead now because she has finally found a story she wants to tell.
“One very big film I’m making is The Dirty Picture 2. I’m planning it after 15 years. This time, I believe there is a story I want to tell,” she said.
What is confirmed — and what is not
The sequel will again revolve around one person’s life, but the central character, lead actor and release date remain under wraps. That leaves audiences with the outline of a film rather than a full picture.
- Confirmed: The Dirty Picture 2 is in planning.
- Confirmed: It will follow one person’s story, like the original.
- Not revealed: The subject, the cast and the release timeline.
Why the original still looms large
Released in December 2011, The Dirty Picture starred Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor. Inspired by the life of Silk Smitha, it traced the South Indian actor’s rise in the entertainment industry and the challenges she faced.
Silk Smitha appeared in more than 450 films over an 18-year career and died by suicide at 35 at her home in Chennai. Vidya Balan went on to win the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance.
Kapoor framed the original as a story about agency. “I never saw her as a victim. I saw her as someone who celebrated her sexuality, and the film did so well,” she said.
Vidya Balan’s lingering connection
In a separate conversation with YouTuber Samdish, Balan said the role changed her in complicated ways. She admitted she became addicted to smoking after the shoot, eventually consuming two to three cigarettes a day. “After The Dirty Picture, I got addicted,” she said.
She also said finishing the film left her feeling liberated, and that being called sexy shifted how she saw herself. That history is one reason the sequel’s casting question feels so loaded for fans. Balan, last seen in Raja Shivaji, will be seen in the upcoming film Jailer 2.
What to watch next
The announcement arrives in a Hindi cinema moment that is increasingly comfortable returning to familiar titles, but a sequel that lands after a decade and a half needs more than nostalgia. The original worked because it gave a bold star a clear point of view. The sequel’s real test will be finding a story strong enough to justify the name.
Until Kapoor reveals her subject, the honest stance for audiences is to keep expectations open. A new story, by design, may not look like the first film.
