Madhuri Dixit’s Husband Didn’t Recognise SRK or Salman

Dr Sriram Nene says he knew no one at his 1999 wedding reception except Amitabh Bachchan, and reveals why he had never watched Madhuri's films.

Madhuri's Husband Didn't Recognise SRK or Salman at the Wedding

Dr Sriram Nene’s Bollywood crash course began after his wedding, not before it. The surgeon and husband of Madhuri Dixit has admitted that he walked into their 1999 wedding reception without recognising two of Hindi cinema’s most famous faces: Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.

The one person he could place was Amitabh Bachchan, and only because he had seen Amar Akbar Anthony. Speaking to Farah Khan on her cooking vlog, Nene described the evening with a light confession. “It was like Prom King,” he said, as quoted by The Times of India: you wave at everyone and later study the wedding album because the faces are not familiar.

A courtship with no Bollywood filter

Nene, who was living in Los Angeles at the time, grew up on Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Star Wars. He did not speak Hindi and did not watch Hindi films. When Farah Khan asked how he had never heard of Madhuri, his answer was simple: that world was simply not on his radar.

He and Madhuri dated for about three months before he proposed. That left very little time for a filmi orientation, so his first brush with Bollywood’s inner circle arrived at the wedding itself.

  • He did not recognise Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan at the reception.
  • The only familiar face was Amitabh Bachchan, remembered from Amar Akbar Anthony.
  • He had not watched Madhuri’s films before they met, and proposed after roughly three months of dating.

Why the confession lands so warmly

The story works because it reverses the usual Bollywood script. Madhuri was one of the biggest stars of her era, and her wedding reception was a who’s who of Hindi cinema. Yet her husband experienced it as a complete outsider, smiling and waving at strangers. He added that both Shah Rukh and Salman were extremely sweet to him, which makes the memory feel warm rather than awkward.

Madhuri and Dr Nene were married on October 17, 1999. They later built their life in the United States, raising sons Arin and Ryan while Madhuri took a break from films. That makes this little anecdote a time capsule from the end of one era of Bollywood, before celebrity faces were everywhere and before a single Instagram post could make them instantly recognisable across continents.
