At 84, Amitabh Bachchan’s Handshake Decline Starts a Debate

Amitabh Bachchan turned 84 and kept his Jalsa birthday tradition, but a politely declined handshake has split fans over access and boundaries.

At 84, Amitabh Bachchan's Handshake Decline Starts a Debate

Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday appearance outside his Mumbai home, Jalsa, is usually a warm annual ritual. On Sunday, as he turned 84, a short exchange with a fan turned that ritual into a wider conversation about celebrity access, fan expectations and personal space.

The actor stepped out in a red kurta to acknowledge the crowd that had gathered outside Jalsa. He waved and greeted fans with folded hands, but the mood shifted briefly when a couple of children appeared to push past the security cordon and bodyguards moved them back.

Then a female fan asked for a handshake. Bachchan politely declined, continued greeting those assembled, posed in front of a giant garland arranged by his fans, thanked them for their affection and went back inside. A video of the exchange spread quickly on social media.

Why a small ‘no’ became a big debate

The clip drew sharply divided reactions. Some commenters felt the actor could have obliged: one wrote, “He could have just shaken hands with her; she came with a lot of hope.” Another comment asked why he could not simply shake hands with a child. Others pushed back, with a user writing, “What’s wrong with these people? He is a human being.”

That split is really about the unspoken contract between stars and fans. Outside Jalsa, fans wait for a glimpse, a wave, sometimes a handshake. When a star says no, even politely, it reminds everyone that access is a gift, not a right. It is also a very human moment: at 84, Bachchan is entitled to decide how much contact he is comfortable with on any given day.

The birthday love still poured in

Beyond the viral clip, the day carried the usual goodwill. Chiranjeevi, Kajol, Sanjay Dutt, Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Suniel Shetty and Shatrughan Sinha were among those who wished him on social media. His daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wrote, “Happy Birthday dearest Pa-Dadajiii. Love and God Bless always.”

  • Bachchan turned 84 on Sunday and kept his annual Jalsa appearance.
  • A female fan’s handshake request was politely declined; the video went viral.
  • Reactions ranged from “he should have obliged” to “respect his personal space.”
  • Several co-stars and family members sent birthday wishes online.

What’s next on screen

Bachchan is busy with the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, in which he returns as Ashwatthama under director Nag Ashwin. The next instalment also stars Prabhas and Kamal Haasan. Reports indicate Sai Pallavi may replace Deepika Padukone in the sequel, though that casting has not been officially confirmed; filming is already in progress.

The Jalsa moment may fade, but it leaves a useful line for fans and stars alike: admiration is welcome, and a boundary is still a boundary.
