Jailer 2 review: Rajinikanth earns 3/5 for mass entertainment

Rajinikanth's Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is back in Jailer 2. Nelson's sequel earns 3/5 for mass moments and cameos, but the Hindi release is limited.

Jailer 2 review: Rajinikanth earns 3/5

Jailer 2 arrives with a clear brief: give Rajinikanth fans the swagger, the whistle moments and the star power they showed up for. Nelson’s sequel earns a 3/5 rating and works best when it leans into its fan-first instincts.

Tiger Muthuvel Pandian’s new normal

After the events of the first film, Tiger (Rajinikanth) has relocated with his family to a quiet Tamil Nadu town. He works as a supervisor at a supermarket, and the locals have no idea about the man they see every day. At home, the family is still mourning Arjun, Tiger’s son. In the syndicate world, Varman’s death has left a vacuum, and loyalist Dileep is put on the job of finding the killer and recovering three truckloads of ancient statues. A tiff with a local official and a job as a driver for fruit-shop owner Moorthi accidentally lead the hunters to Tiger.

Where Jailer 2 delivers

The first half is carried by comedy more than action. Namo Narayana’s Moorthi is a genuine surprise, and Yogi Babu’s Vimal turns their scenes into the film’s most consistent source of laughs. The interval block is built for a theatrical frenzy, and the second half adds Vidya Balan as Kantha, S J Suryah as Bodhi Kalpak and Mithun Chakraborty as Chakri Kalpak. Rajinikanth remains the centre of gravity; at 75, he can still turn a simple walk into an event.

  • Hrithik Roshan appears as Roddy and leads the cameo charge.
  • Shiva Rajkumar steps in as Narasimha.
  • Mohanlal and Jackie Shroff round out the special appearances as Mathew and Kamdev.

The rough edges

Some plot turns are convenient, and the villains occasionally look weaker than the build-up promises. The item song does not have the recall of the first film, and Anirudh’s ‘Bindaas’ is a step down from ‘Kaavaalaa’. The sharper concern is structural: the Hindi version has opened only in non-national multiplex chains and single-screen cinemas, which could shrink its box-office ceiling even if the film connects with fans.

Should you book a ticket?

If you are buying a ticket for logic, Jailer 2 will not satisfy you. If you are buying it for Rajinikanth’s swagger, punchy mass dialogue, a superb interval block and a parade of special appearances, the film is honest about what it is. Bollywood Hungama’s verdict is a “paisa-vasool mass entertainer” that gives fans the elevations, dialogues and cameos they came for, with the Hindi release the one real variable. It is a theatrical ride built for the committed fan, not the sceptic.
