Smita Patil died 15 days after childbirth: Raj Babbar remembers

Raj Babbar revisits his controversial romance with Smita Patil, their 1983 marriage, and her death 15 days after Prateik's birth in 1986.

Raj Babbar recalls Smita Patil's final 15 days

Raj Babbar’s relationship with Smita Patil has resurfaced in a fresh round of conversation, and his memories frame it as both a love story and a wound. The actor met Patil while he was already married to Nadira Zaheer, and the chapter that followed remains one of Hindi cinema’s most discussed personal histories.

The meeting that began with a clash

Babbar has said their first film together came in 1980, but the real spark arrived on the set of Satish Misra’s Bheegi Palken in Rourkela, Odisha. He recalled a first meeting that ended in what he called a “sweet clash”, adding that he was impressed by Patil “from the word go”.

In an earlier interview with The Times of India, he said the bond was “not the result of problems with Nadira — it just happened”. Patil entered his life unexpectedly, and the professional association slowly turned intimate. It was a relationship with real emotional complexity: Patil knew Nadira’s position and the pain the circumstances could cause.

A timeline cut short

The key dates make the loss feel immediate.

  • 1983: Raj Babbar and Smita Patil marry
  • 1986: Their son Prateik Babbar is born
  • December 13, 1986: Patil dies at 31, just 15 days after childbirth

Babbar remained clear that his feelings for Patil were not a reaction to trouble at home. He said Nadira was mature enough to understand, and that Juhi, his daughter from his marriage to Nadira, loved being with Patil.

Her final journey

Years later, Babbar described the ride to hospital in an interview with Rediff. Patil kept apologising along the way, and he kept telling her everything would be okay. She looked at him with tears in her eyes. After an hour, a doctor said she had gone into a coma.

Patil’s death from complications after childbirth left the industry in shock. She was 31, and her son Prateik was 15 days old.

Why this account still lands

There is no tidy resolution here, and that is why the story has outlived the gossip. It is remembered through Babbar’s tenderness and regret, and through the work Patil left behind. For a new generation of fans, it also reshapes how Prateik Babbar’s family story is understood.
