Shilpa Rao pushed a shy Amit Trivedi into Bollywood
Amit Trivedi recalls how Shilpa Rao took their song to Anurag Kashyap and showed him No Smoking, despite Trivedi's wish to stay in independent music.

Amit Trivedi’s film career did not begin with a demo, a manager or a carefully planned pitch. It began with a singer friend who decided he needed to meet Anurag Kashyap. In a new conversation with Komal Nahta, Trivedi revisited the early days and the film that left him completely confused.
A detour from independent music
Trivedi was already a working musician before Bollywood knew his name. He had done stage performances, then spent four to five years in advertising and television. Working in films was never his aim, and his family had no connection to cinema. His real interest lay in independent music.
While working in advertising, he met singer Shilpa Rao, who was a regular voice in studio sessions. Her voice struck him, and the two became close friends. They planned an album together. Their first track was “Dhol Yaara Dhol,” the song that later became part of Dev D in 2009.
Trivedi’s early route looked like this:
- Stage musical performances
- Four to five years in advertising
- Television work
- A planned independent music album with Shilpa Rao
- An introduction to Anurag Kashyap through that album
The meeting with Anurag Kashyap
Trivedi’s plan was modest: make a music video and pitch it to MTV or Sony. Shilpa Rao had a different path in mind. She took the songs to film directors and eventually told Trivedi she had met Anurag Kashyap and played him their material.
Trivedi was reluctant. He asked her, “Why are you doing this?” and admitted he was naturally shy and found the film world overwhelming. But Shilpa pushed him into the meeting.
Kashyap made him comfortable immediately. At that time, Black Friday had just released and No Smoking was in production. The director even showed Trivedi a raw cut of No Smoking, without background score or dubbing.
What he made of No Smoking
The screening was a first for Trivedi, but the surreal film left him more anxious than inspired. He confessed, “Mujhe film dekh ke kuch samaj nahin aaya!” He began wondering what he would say if Kashyap asked his opinion. No Smoking, which starred John Abraham, Paresh Rawal and Ranvir Shorey, remains one of Kashyap’s most talked-about films.
Why this story still matters
For Hindi film fans, it is a glimpse of how chance relationships shape the industry. A composer who did not want to work in films ended up changing the sound of modern Hindi cinema, starting with Dev D. It also highlights Shilpa Rao’s role as both singer and connector.
Trivedi laughed about the whole turn of events, but the takeaway is serious: a colleague who believes in your work can open a door you would never knock on yourself.
