Daler Mehndi Row: FWICE Writes to PM Modi Over Stage Humiliation

FWICE writes to PM Modi and Uttarakhand CM after Daler Mehndi's on-stage confrontation; Mika Singh denies alcohol claims and seeks payment proof.

FWICE Writes to PM Modi After Daler Mehndi Stage Row

Stage row reaches PM Modi

Daler Mehndi’s on-stage confrontation in Uttarakhand has now drawn an official protest from the entertainment industry. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, urging elected representatives to deal with performers with “compassion and professionalism.”

The episode began on Sunday at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri, a cultural programme tied to the Navratri celebrations. Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal walked onto the stage while Daler Mehndi was performing, questioned his condition and asked him to stop. In widely shared clips, the minister can be heard telling the singer that he was invited to entertain the audience and that performing in an inappropriate state “is not appropriate.”

FWICE said in its letter that concerns about a performer’s health or a technical question such as lip-syncing should be raised with “sensitivity and discretion,” not as a public reprimand. The federation also reminded readers of Daler Mehndi’s long career; Bollywood fans will remember that he reprised his track Na Na Na Na Na Re in the 2024 comedy Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video.

“An incident involving the public humiliation of such a senior artist is deeply distressing to the entire entertainment fraternity.”

That is how the federation described the controversy in its letter.

Mika Singh pushes back

Daler Mehndi has not made a public statement, but his brother Mika Singh has taken over the defence. On X, Mika wrote that Daler “does not drink alcohol” and had performed despite recovering from major surgery. He compared the public scolding to a school or college incident, asking how an artiste of Daler’s standing could be insulted that way.

Mika also responded to Uniyal’s claim that Daler was offered Rs 35 lakh for the performance. He asked the minister to make the payment records public and to say whether the amount was paid in cash or cheque. That turns the payment figure from a taunt into a test of transparency.

Why this matters for fans

For the filmi audience, the dispute goes beyond one performance. It raises a familiar question: when a viral video stokes outrage, how much is verified before the audience picks a side? The alcohol allegation in the minister’s remarks has not been independently established, and FWICE has stated that Daler is not a “consumer of alcohol” and was dealing with post-surgery health issues.

Here is what is known so far:

  • FWICE has written to PM Modi and the Uttarakhand chief minister.
  • Mika Singh denies the alcohol allegation and says Daler was unwell after surgery.
  • Mika has asked the minister to show receipts for the Rs 35 lakh payment.
  • Daler Mehndi has not yet commented on the incident.

What to watch next

FWICE has asked the Prime Minister and the chief minister to advise public representatives to exercise greater sensitivity while dealing with artistes. That may not produce an immediate apology, but it gives the industry’s concerns an official platform.

For fans, the next real update is whether the minister releases the payment details Mika has asked for, or whether Daler himself responds. Until then, the exchange is another reminder that a stage camera is always on, and restraint often travels slower than a clip.
