Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Turns 10: Karan Johar Has No Regrets

Karan Johar marks 10 years of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil with a personal note on unrequited love, heartbreak and why he would tell the same story.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil turns 10 — and Karan Johar has no regrets

Ten years after Ae Dil Hai Mushkil opened in cinemas, Karan Johar is not softening his stance. The filmmaker marked the anniversary with a reflective note, calling the 2016 romantic drama a deeply personal story built from his own experiences of love, longing and heartbreak.

He wrote that the film came together at a vulnerable moment, when he understood that one-sided love did not need remorse or sympathy. The idea that stayed with him, in his words, was that “the power of love is so much larger than the reciprocation of the same.”

The story and the stars who carried it

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil follows Ayan, played by Ranbir Kapoor, a singer who falls for Alizeh (Anushka Sharma), even though she sees him only as a friend. The film follows Ayan through that unrequited attachment and a later connection with Saba, a poet played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Fawad Khan appears as Ali, Alizeh’s lover, and Shah Rukh Khan makes a cameo as Saba’s former husband.

  • Ranbir Kapoor as Ayan, the singer navigating one-sided love.
  • Anushka Sharma as Alizeh, the friend who cannot return his feelings.
  • Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Saba, a poet with a brief romantic connection to Ayan.
  • Fawad Khan as Ali, Alizeh’s lover, with Shah Rukh Khan in a cameo.

Karan ended his note by thanking the lead cast for being part of the film.

Why ‘selflessness’ is the actual subject

The anniversary note is less a promotional recap and more a statement of intent. Karan wrote that loving someone should be an act of selflessness, and that lovers often need to set aside the “I” inside “I love you.” That framing is why the film still resonates: it treats unrequited love not as a failure to be pitied, but as an emotional education.

The director also acknowledged the film’s flaws and the polarised responses it received. Even with those imperfections, he said he would tell the story the same way today.

Why this matters now

In an industry that often measures success by opening-weekend numbers and social chatter, a filmmaker publicly standing by a personal, imperfect film is rare. It gives audiences permission to revisit Ae Dil Hai Mushkil with fresh eyes and to appreciate what it attempted, not just what it achieved.

For fans, the anniversary is an invitation to return to the film’s central question: whether love still matters when it is not returned. Karan’s answer, a decade later, is unchanged.
