Ramayana Part 2 shifts to Diwali 2028 as trilogy door opens
Producer Namit Malhotra confirms Ramayana Part 2 will arrive during Diwali 2028, a year later than planned, and says a trilogy could follow if Part 1 lands.

Namit Malhotra has a clear message for Ramayana fans: nothing about the franchise’s future is being rushed. The producer confirmed that Ramayana Part 2 will now release during Diwali 2028, a year later than the earlier 2027 plan, and he left the door open for a third film if Part 1 connects with viewers.
A Diwali finale, one year later
Moviegoers catching Ramayana: Part 1 in cinemas would have noticed the end-credits promise that a sequel is coming without a locked date. Speaking to E! before the film’s release, Malhotra explained that the shift is deliberate.
He said the extra time is about wanting “to do justice for a film of this size” and avoiding a rush job, with the finale delivered in the grandest way the story deserves.
Two films, but maybe three
The current plan is a two-part saga directed by Nitesh Tiwari, but Malhotra said the story is not locked at two. The audience response to Part 1 will help decide whether the tale expands into a trilogy.
That is a meaningful position for a project built on an epic of this scale. Instead of announcing a trilogy upfront, the producers are letting the first film’s reception shape the next move.
One epic, two cuts
The first film has been prepared in two versions: one for Indian audiences and another written especially for English-speaking international viewers, with different running times and storytelling choices. Malhotra said the team would prefer to avoid separate versions for the sequel, and Tiwari wants to stay with a single cut—but the final call could depend on how the film performs in different markets.
Ramayana: Part 1 released worldwide on November 5, 2026, in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama, Sai Pallavi is Sita, Yash is Ravana, Sunny Deol is Hanuman and Ravi Dubey is Lakshman. The supporting cast includes Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Arun Govil and Kajal Aggarwal, while Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman handle the music.
Why the shift matters
For fans, the move to Diwali 2028 is a signal that the makers are treating the finale as an event, not a follow-up. It also gives audiences a direct role: if they want a third chapter, showing up for Part 1 is the clearest vote.
- Part 1 opened on November 5, 2026, in five languages.
- Part 2 is now confirmed for Diwali 2028, not 2027.
- Part 3 is possible, but depends on Part 1’s reception.
- Two cuts of Part 1 exist for Indian and international viewers.
Everything about Ramayana is being framed as a conversation with the audience—an unusual position for a film this large, and one that makes the next few weeks in cinemas matter more than usual.
