The controversy surrounding the film Adipurush, featuring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon, has taken an unexpected turn as the director, Om Raut, and writer, Manoj Muntashir, face death threats from the Kshatriya Karni Sena. Amidst this ongoing row over the film’s dialogues, the Allahabad High Court has delivered strong criticism, questioning both the censor board and the filmmakers.
During a hearing on a petition against certain contentious dialogues in Adipurush, the Allahabad High Court expressed its concerns, stating, “The nature of dialogues in the film is a significant issue. Ramayana is an epitome for us, and people read Ramcharitmanas before leaving their homes.”
The court further questioned, “If we close our eyes on this issue too, because it is said that the people of this religion are very tolerant, will it be put to the test as well?”
Expressing disappointment, the court highlighted, “It’s good that people did not harm the law and order situation after watching the film. However, Lord Hanuman and Sita have been portrayed in a disrespectful manner. Such scenes should have been removed from the very beginning. Some scenes seem to be of an ‘A’ (adult) category. It’s very difficult to watch such films.”
The Allahabad High Court also raised concerns about the effectiveness of the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC), questioning their role in overseeing such matters. The court emphasized that the removal of dialogues alone would not suffice and called for actions regarding specific scenes.
In response to the argument regarding the addition of a disclaimer in the film, the court questioned whether it implied a lack of intelligence among the people and youth of the country.
The court concluded by remarking, “We saw it on the news that people went to the theaters and got the film shut down. Be thankful nobody vandalized it.” The court has also directed co-writer Manoj Muntashir Shukla to be made a party in the case and issued a notice for his response within a week. The hearing will continue tomorrow.
This critical stance taken by the Allahabad High Court sheds light on the ongoing controversy surrounding Adipurush and raises significant questions about the importance of tolerance, censorship, and the portrayal of revered characters in films. As the legal proceedings unfold, the industry and the audience eagerly await the resolution of this contentious matter. Stay tuned for further updates as the court’s decision shapes the fate of Adipurush.
