In a powerful collaboration, Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma has partnered with WhatsApp to highlight the transformative impact of private messaging. Recent research commissioned by WhatsApp, conducted by YouGov, has revealed that women worldwide are more likely to open up about their struggles if approached privately by a friend. To encourage women to connect with each other privately and foster a safe space for communication, WhatsApp has launched a unique campaign featuring Anushka Sharma.
As part of the campaign, mirrored messages will appear in women’s restrooms in Delhi’s malls. Triggered by motion, these messages will include a QR code that offers suggestions for reaching out via private WhatsApp messages. Just like the disappearing messages feature on WhatsApp, these restroom messages will vanish without a trace.
Anushka Sharma, expressing her support for the campaign, emphasized that women often feel unsafe when discussing their issues openly but are more likely to confide in a trusted friend in a private setting. The actor believes in the importance of creating secure spaces where women can open up, seek help, and assert their safety and well-being. Through this campaign, Anushka Sharma aims to raise awareness about the empowering nature of private conversations and encourages everyone to check in on their friends, colleagues, and loved ones.
Sandhya Devanathan, Vice President of Meta India, emphasized WhatsApp’s commitment to safeguarding users’ personal conversations with their loved ones. WhatsApp’s built-in layers of protection prioritize privacy, and the addition of these mirrored messages aims to inspire conversations, support, and empowerment among women. The initiative intends to remind women of the significance of reaching out and supporting one another, fostering a culture of open dialogue through private messaging on WhatsApp.
The campaign launch coincides with an important announcement from Mark Zuckerberg, introducing a new privacy feature called “Silence Unknown Callers.” This feature helps users screen out spam, scams, and calls from unknown individuals, providing greater control over their phone calls. Additionally, WhatsApp is rolling out Privacy Checkup, a step-by-step feature that guides users through essential privacy settings, allowing them to choose the level of protection that suits them best, all within one convenient place.
The YouGov survey, conducted across the UK, India, Brazil, and the US, involved 6,000 participants and revealed that various issues, including mental health, domestic abuse, workplace harassment, and sexual harassment, significantly impact individuals. These findings further emphasize the need for private spaces where individuals can seek support and share their experiences.
The partnership between Anushka Sharma and WhatsApp signifies a powerful step towards empowering women through private messaging. By creating safe and secure spaces for conversations, this collaboration aims to foster a sense of community, support, and empowerment among women across the globe. Stay tuned for more updates on this impactful campaign and the inspiring stories it generates.
