The upcoming ZEE5 movie ‘Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai’ and its lead actor Manoj Bajpayee have received a legal notice from the charitable trust of rape convict Asaram Bapu, alleging that the movie’s villain character has been modelled after the convict. The trust has also sent the notice to the Information & Broadcasting Ministry and CBFC, urging them to stall the movie’s release and remove its trailer from the internet.
The notice alleges that the teaser and trailer of the movie contain “derogatory” and “highly objectionable” content towards Asaram, and portrays him as a “Ravan and serious rapist.” The notice further states that the movie’s release will cause irreparable damage to Asaram’s character, reputation, and standing in society, and will result in a loss of trust and respect among his followers and admirers.
The notice also highlights that Asaram is currently facing imprisonment for alleged offenses under POCSO act and that the film can have an influence in the final verdict. Moreover, the notice adds that if the filmmakers proceed to release or telecast the movie on OTT platforms, necessary restraint/prohibitory orders may be issued against them for its release/telecast/promotion.
This legal notice has created a stir in the Bollywood industry, with many wondering if it will impact the release of the movie. It remains to be seen how the filmmakers will respond to the notice and if the release of ‘Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai’ will be affected.
