Indian 3 Returns to Post-Production After Indian 2 Fumbles

Kamal Haasan and Shankar's Indian 3 has entered post-production. Can Senapathy's origin story repair the damage left by Indian 2?

Indian 3 restarts post-production with Indian 2's baggage

The makers of Indian 3 have pulled a film many believed was shelved back into the light. On October 8, they confirmed that post-production is underway on the Kamal Haasan-starrer directed by Shankar.

That is more than a routine production update. It puts the third instalment on a collision course with the disappointment of Indian 2, which opened in 2024 to harsh criticism and an avalanche of memes.

The 1996 classic has cast a long shadow

The first Indian, released in 1996, made Senapathy an iconic figure in Tamil cinema — an ageing freedom fighter who takes the law into his own hands against corruption. Nearly three decades later, Indian 2 carried that legacy into theatres.

Audiences did not follow. The sequel struggled with screenplay, pacing and performances. Its Varma Kalai sequences, intended to showcase Senapathy’s extraordinary skill, became a source of ridicule, and Siddharth’s dialogues were widely turned into memes. The anti-corruption message still had relevance, but the storytelling lacked the urgency that made the original work.

What Indian 3 has going for it

The most encouraging sign for Indian 3 arrived before Indian 2 even released. A glimpse added to the second film’s end credits pointed to Senapathy’s historical roots, with Kamal Haasan playing both the ageing Senapathy and his father, Veerasekaran Balram.

That origin-story pivot could give the sequel a clearer emotional spine:

  • A fresh angle: The film can explore what shaped Senapathy instead of repeating the present-day vigilante formula.
  • A stronger anchor: Many fans felt this material should have appeared earlier, giving the sprawling narrative more emotional weight.
  • A built-in advantage: Indian 3 was shot alongside Indian 2, so the footage already exists.

Redemption is not automatic

A promising glimpse is not the same as a compelling feature film. Indian 3 still has to sustain that interest across a full runtime. It also arrives after Game Changer, Shankar’s subsequent release, drew similar criticism about weak characterisation and uneven narrative.

For the franchise to recover, the third film needs sharper writing, a disciplined structure and emotional stakes that go beyond Kamal Haasan’s return as Senapathy. The actor’s presence may bring people to theatres, but it will not guarantee goodwill.

The burden of proof sits with the makers

No release date has been confirmed yet. What the announcement does confirm is that the project is moving ahead, and that means the makers must now face the expectations and disappointment Indian 2 left behind.

If the origin story deepens Senapathy and delivers a tighter film, it could be a course correction for both the franchise and Shankar. If not, Indian 3 risks reinforcing the damage rather than repairing it.
