Rajinikanth’s Rs 1,000 crore reason to return in Jailer 2

Before Jailer 2 opens on October 15, revisit the ending that made Rajinikanth change his mind about sequels and return as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian.

Rajinikanth's Rs 1,000 crore reason to return

Two days before Jailer 2 brings Rajinikanth back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian on October 15, the first film’s ending is doing the storytelling work a teaser usually does.

The first film ended on a warning, not a full stop

In Jailer, Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is living a quiet family life in Tamil Nadu. That peace shatters when his son Arjun, an assistant commissioner of police, vanishes while investigating Varman, a gangster who steals temple idols for overseas buyers. The police suggest suicide; Muthuvel refuses to accept it.

His search turns into a one-man campaign against Varman’s operation. Muthuvel is no ordinary retiree. He is a former Tihar jailer with a fearsome reputation and a network of allies: Narasimha (Shiva Rajkumar), Mathew (Mohanlal) and temple trustee Blast Mohan (Sunil). The rescue of Arjun, however, becomes the film’s cruel twist: Arjun has been working with Varman all along. In the finale, Muthuvel must choose, and he signals his allies to shoot his own son.

Jailer closes with Muthuvel walking away, discarding the chain that held his son’s childhood tooth. But Varman’s final warning hangs in the air: his idol-smuggling operation is only one node in a much larger criminal network.

What changed Rajinikanth’s mind

Jailer 2 was not an automatic decision. Rajinikanth says he was initially reluctant about sequels, having passed on Baashha 2 and Petta 2. His worry, he explained, was that a sequel often stretches the original rather than deepens it.

Rewatching Jailer after its OTT release changed that. At the Jailer 2 Super Show, Rajinikanth pointed to a specific clue: three containers carrying goods worth Rs 1,000 crore, and Varman’s warning of a bigger network. As he put it, “he says there’s a bigger network and that they wouldn’t spare him either. So, the story was perfect for a sequel.”

That is why he called director Nelson Dilipkumar. The sequel exists to investigate what the first film only hinted at, not simply to repeat a blockbuster formula.

Why this matters for fans

The loose thread gives Jailer 2 a clear job: reveal the network above Varman and test Tiger again. It also means the emotional wound from Arjun’s betrayal can carry forward instead of being reset.

  • Jailer ends with Varman dead but his larger network unnamed
  • The Rs 1,000 crore container detail marks the scale of the unfinished war
  • Rajinikanth returned after hearing that warning again on OTT
  • Jailer 2 releases October 15

Before heading to the theatre, rewatch the original’s last stretch. The hidden camera in the crown and Varman’s final lines are the two clues that matter most.
