Premalu 2 shelved, Girish AD’s next film earns Rs 325 crore
Girish AD says a year on Premalu 2 ended in a shelving, but Bethlehem Kudumba Unit crossed Rs 325 crore to become Malayalam cinema's top grosser.

For Girish AD, the biggest hit of his career began with a door closing. The Malayalam director revealed at the success celebration of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit in Kochi on Sunday that he had spent a full year developing Premalu 2 before the sequel was unexpectedly shelved.
“We lost an entire year because of it,” he said, describing the decision as a huge setback. “There was no need for us to lose that much time.”
From a shelved sequel to an industry hit
Girish had wanted to make Bethlehem Kudumba Unit even before Premalu became a blockbuster, but the success of that film pushed the sequel ahead in his plans. Once Premalu 2 was abandoned, the team turned to the Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju starrer and completed it in a short window.
Had the sequel stayed on track, it would have reached theatres around Vishu last year. Instead, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit arrived three to four months later and turned into a phenomenon.
The numbers behind the comeback
- Rs 325 crore plus: worldwide gross of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit.
- Fastest Malayalam film to cross that figure.
- All-time No. 1: now Malayalam cinema’s highest grosser.
- One year: the time Girish says he lost on the shelved sequel.
Those numbers matter beyond bragging rights. A Malayalam film crossing Rs 325 crore worldwide signals that the language’s theatrical market can support bigger bets, and that a director’s loyal collaborators can compress a production schedule without shrinking its ambition.
Girish credited Bhavana Studios and screenwriter Kiran Josey for backing him through the difficult stretch and helping finish the film sooner than planned. The film also reunites his regular collaborators: writer Kiran Josey, cinematographer Ajmal Sabu and editor Aakash Joseph Varghese.
Why the pivot worked
The twist here is not simply that a fallback film succeeded. It is that the team redirected the energy of a cancelled sequel into an original story the director already cared about. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit now stands as a case study in making a setback productive.
After Premalu became a huge hit, a sequel was the obvious next move. But the record shows that an original family drama, backed by a trusted banner and core crew, could outrun the franchise plan. Girish said he never imagined the response, calling it a personal victory.
What this means for Malayalam cinema
The all-time record is a reminder that a blockbuster does not need a sequel to keep a filmmaker relevant. It also gives a clearer picture of Bhavana Studios, whose key names include Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran. Their bet on letting Girish pivot quickly appears to have paid off in record time.
For audiences, the result is a rare win-win: a record-breaking original film, a filmmaker with renewed momentum, and a production house whose patience with a stalled project produced Malayalam cinema’s biggest number yet.
