418 Review: Atmospheric Horror Earns 2.75/5

Prashanth Neel-backed 418 builds a genuinely unsettling hostel horror, but social media hype may leave jump-scare fans cold. Our review.

418 Review: Atmospheric Horror Earns 2.75/5

Telugu horror 418 arrived in theatres on October 23, 2026 with backing from Prashanth Neel and Mythri Movie Makers, a first-time director at the helm, and social media chatter that promised a genuinely scary ride. Kirtan Nadagouda’s film sets its mystery in a former mental asylum that has been converted into a boys’ hostel, where Room No. 418 carries a supernatural reputation.

The story and the sound

Vivek Shankar (Surya Raj) is given Room No. 417, next door to the infamous 418. When he experiences something bizarre, his friend Rohith (Charan Lakkaraju) refuses to believe him. Vivek digs deeper, and the film moves from hostel dread into a wider set of revelations. The cast includes Ramesh Indira, Preethi Pagadala and, most effectively, Chaithra J Achar.

What sets 418 apart is its commitment to atmospheric horror. The review highlights how setting, lighting, sound design and background score work together to keep the mood ominous. The echoing sound of anklets is called out as a particularly effective touch, and the film stays loyal to its core concept instead of switching genres midway.

Where the hype hurts

Before release, word spread that 418 was “the scariest film ever” and that even censor board members were shaken. Whether planned or accidental, this became the film’s biggest drawback. Audiences looking for traditional jump scares may be disappointed because the film leans into slow, atmospheric dread rather than sudden shocks.

  • Works: moody horror, a committed lead performance, and sound that elevates key moments.
  • Wobbles: a weak romantic song, a climax that needed stronger closure, and pacing that slows in places.

Our take

Chaithra J Achar is the standout. Her expressions can be genuinely scary, and she carries much of the emotional weight. First-time director Kirtan Nadagouda shows promise, especially in the way he writes the backstory with emotional grounding, though there is room to grow in pacing and payoff.

For Total Filmi readers, 418 is best viewed as a sincere atmospheric horror film rather than the terrifying event social media promised. If you enjoy dread built through sound, light and setting, it is a worthwhile watch. If you want rapid jump scares, temper your expectations. The 2.75/5 rating reflects a film that gets its mood right but cannot fully escape its own buzz.
