Anirudh-Kavya’s November 21 Reception: PM Modi, Sonia Invited

The Chennai reception for composer Anirudh Ravichander and Kavya Maran on November 21 has invited PM Modi, Sonia Gandhi, Nirmala Sitharaman and more.

Anirudh-Kavya's November 21 Reception: PM Modi, Sonia

Anirudh Ravichander and Kavya Maran’s wedding is shaping up to be one of the biggest crossover celebrations in recent memory. The music composer and the Sun TV Network and Sunrisers Hyderabad heiress are set to marry, and their Chennai reception on November 21 has already turned into a guest list that spans politics, cricket, cinema and business.

An invitation list that crosses party lines

Sun TV Group chairman Kalanithi Maran has been personally delivering reception invitations. In New Delhi, he met Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, with Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi also present. He separately met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, accompanied by his wife Kavery Kalanithi. Photographs of both meetings were shared on the Sun TV Network’s official X account.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited at a meeting attended by Anirudh’s parents, actor Ravi Raghavendra and Lakshmi Ravichander.
  • Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was invited at his Jubilee Hills residence in Hyderabad; the Chief Minister’s Office confirmed the November 21 Chennai reception.
  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, popularly known as Thalapathy Vijay, met the families with Anirudh present.
  • Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is also on the list, according to the reports.

A Navaratri puja that turned filmi

Before the formal invitations made headlines, Anirudh’s home hosted a Navaratri puja that became a gathering of Tamil cinema regulars. Social media visuals from October 22 showed superstar Rajinikanth attending, alongside Sivakarthikeyan, Shalini Ajith Kumar, director Nelson Dilipkumar, and actors Sneha and Prasanna. Sivakarthikeyan’s wife Aarthi was also reported at the gathering.

Rajinikanth’s presence felt especially fitting given his long association with Anirudh, who has scored several of the superstar’s films. Sivakarthikeyan too has worked with the composer on multiple projects.

Greece first, Chennai next

The couple’s wedding celebrations are expected to be an intimate, two-day affair in Greece, likely on November 10 and 11. According to an NDTV report cited in the coverage, the ceremony will be attended by close family members and a select group of friends. The report also said the wedding will not take place in Santorini, despite earlier speculation, and that the Maran family had been arranging flights, accommodation and transportation for guests personally. At the time, printed invitations for the Greece leg had not been distributed.

In June, Anirudh’s uncle and actor Y Gee Mahendra spoke warmly about the wedding in an interview with KPTV. “He is getting into a very big wedding,” he said.

Why this matters for filmi fans

Anirudh is one of Indian cinema’s most in-demand composers, with credits including Leo, Indian 2, Vettaiyan, Vidaamuyarchi and Coolie. Kavya is the daughter of Sun Group chairman Kalanithi Maran, associated with Sun TV Network and the IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad, and a familiar face for cricket followers during IPL matches.

That combination makes this wedding a genuine meeting point of two very visible worlds: the Tamil and pan-Indian film industries on one side, and a media-and-sports empire on the other. The political invitations are simply the clearest sign of how far that influence reaches.
