Udta Teer review: Ayushmann Khurrana’s comedy scores 4.5/5

Udta Teer earns a 4.5/5 verdict for Ayushmann Khurrana's mistaken-identity comedy about a Pakistani agent who forgets which side he is on.

Udta Teer review: 4.5/5 for Ayushmann Khurrana's comedy

Comedy lives or dies by conviction, and Udta Teer commits to its loopiest idea from the start: a Pakistani intelligence officer loses his memory after an accident in India and wakes up convinced he is an Indian counterintelligence officer. That one switch powers the new Ayushmann Khurrana starrer, which earns a 4.5/5 verdict.

A spy, a memory wipe and an identity crisis

Written and directed by Akash A. Kaushik, the film is a fast-paced comedy of mistaken identity. It does not lean only on elaborate situations; much of the laughter comes from witty exchanges, well-timed reactions and the widening gap between the hero’s assumed identity and reality.

Who makes the chaos sing?

  • Ayushmann Khurrana anchors the absurdity with natural comic timing, making the film’s increasingly ridiculous situations feel believable within its exaggerated world.
  • Sara Ali Khan adds energy and charm, lifting the lighter moments.
  • The wider ensemble—including the late Mukul Dev as Azhar Maqsood, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Rahul Bose, Suhail Nayyar, Raghubir Yadav and Brijendra Kala—keeps the comedy moving.

Dialogue and score do the heavy lifting

The writing consistently finds humour in simple conversations, and the ensemble delivers the lines with timing that makes them land. Sachin-Jigar’s background score, with lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, becomes almost another participant in the comedy, underlining the absurdity at every turn.

The second half could use a trim

The film is not flawless. The first half moves briskly and sets up the central confusion well, but the second half loses momentum in places, and a few sequences run longer than necessary. A tighter edit would keep the humour from feeling repetitive. Still, the performances and dialogue largely make up for it, and Kaushik lets the story embrace its absurd premise rather than chase realism.

A heavyweight comedy package

Produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, with Raunaq Bajaj as co-producer, Udta Teer is backed by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment. That backing brings together an experienced ensemble and a team that understands the appeal of a light, commercially minded comedy.

For Hindi film fans, this is a low-stakes, high-chaos outing that knows exactly what it wants to be. It does not chase realism; it chases laughs. If you watch for clever dialogue, comic performances and musical cues that land like punchlines, it delivers—just bring a little patience for the post-interval stretch.
