Rajinikanth Watches Jailer 2 with Fans After 40 Years
Tamil superstar Rajinikanth watched Jailer 2 with fans in a Chennai multiplex, his first public theatre screening of his own film in four decades.

Chennai moviegoers got a rare treat on Friday night when Rajinikanth turned up at PVR Cinemas inside Phoenix Marketcity in Velachery to watch Jailer 2 as a regular member of the audience. For the Tamil superstar, it was more than a promotional pit stop. It was his first public theatre screening of one of his own films in four decades, according to Sun Pictures.
A fan-first night out
The actor arrived quietly with his grandson Linga and Jailer 2 composer Anirudh Ravichander. Video shared by Sun Pictures captured him being received by a small team at the multiplex before he walked into the auditorium. Rather than introducing the film from the stage, he settled in among regular ticket-buyers to watch the Nelson Dilipkumar-directed action drama.
Why the rare appearance matters
Rajinikanth’s fandom runs deep, but the actor has spent much of his mass-hero era keeping a certain distance from the spectacle. A public screening closes that gap, even briefly. It turns a film that is already playing in cinemas into a personal memory for everyone in that hall, and it hands Jailer 2 the kind of organic buzz that no promotional interview can replicate.
It also gives the sequel a new beat after its October 15, 2026 theatrical release. The cameo-filled run was already in motion; this multiplex moment stretches the conversation beyond the opening-weekend excitement.
Jailer 2 at a glance
- Direct sequel to the 2023 blockbuster Jailer, reuniting Rajinikanth with director Nelson Dilipkumar.
- Features an ensemble cast and a much-talked-about cameo by Hrithik Roshan as Roddy.
- Produced by Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Pictures.
The industry checks in
Actor, producer and parliamentarian Kamal Haasan congratulated Rajinikanth after the film emerged as a worldwide hit. In a post on X written in Tamil, Haasan said word had come in that Jailer 2 had become a superhit worldwide, and he sent wishes to Rajinikanth, Nelson Dilipkumar, Anirudh and the Sun Pictures team.
India Today’s review described Jailer 2 as “a well-crafted commercial entertainer” that occasionally falls back on familiar formulas. The review found some narrative detours and an underwhelming climax, but credited Nelson’s writing, the film’s absurdist humour and Rajinikanth’s enduring screen presence for making it work.
