Jailer 2: Santhanam shot scenes that didn’t reach theatres

A behind-the-scenes video now doing the rounds has given Jailer 2 fans a strange piece of news: comedian Santhanam was on set, but not on screen. The clip shows him celebrating Vidya Balan’s birthday on January 1 with Rajinikanth, director Nelson Dilipkumar and other members of the team. It is a warm, casual moment from production, yet it has reopened a conversation the final film had quietly closed.

For those joining the conversation late, Jailer 2 is the follow-up to the 2023 hit Jailer. That film turned Rajinikanth’s angry-family-man avatar into a celebration of his screen presence and gave Nelson a franchise built on action, wit and surprise casting. So the absence of a comic actor like Santhanam was always going to be noticed.

What the viral footage shows

• The video is from January 1, during a birthday celebration for Vidya Balan.
• It places Santhanam on set with Rajinikanth, Nelson Dilipkumar and the Jailer 2 team.
• His scenes were shot but did not make the theatrical cut.

None of this tells us exactly what Santhanam filmed. The circulating account suggests he may have shot comic exchanges with Rajinikanth, but no official explanation has been given for the edit.

Why fans are disappointed

That is the part viewers feel most strongly about. Nelson Dilipkumar has built a reputation for mixing action with humour and larger-than-life moments, so comedy is not a small add-on in his films. Santhanam’s style of comedy with Rajinikanth felt, to many fans, like a natural fit for the franchise. The decision to remove him from the final version has left some disappointed and curious in equal measure.

The deleted scenes also do something bigger: they ask fans to think about what a two-hour-plus action entertainer chooses to leave out. Every cut is an argument about pacing, tone and story. In this case, the argument is happening in public because a simple birthday video revealed that a popular actor was part of the shoot.

Could Jailer 3 bring him back?

The viral clip has naturally led to speculation about Jailer 3. Some fans hope Nelson will find a place for Santhanam if the franchise moves ahead. For now, there is no official confirmation of the next instalment, and no word on Santhanam’s involvement. The only certainty is that the footage gives audiences a glimpse of a collaboration that never reached theatres, and another reason to imagine what those missing portions might have brought to the film.

This is a useful reminder that the film we finally watch is only one version of many possible films. Sometimes the most interesting chapters are the ones left on the edit table.
