Jailer 2 crosses Rs 700 crore: Rajinikanth’s hit pattern
Jailer 2 has crossed Rs 700 crore and pushed Rajinikanth's box-office ceiling higher. Here is how the superstar's biggest hits kept answering doubt.

At 75, Rajinikanth has reset Tamil cinema’s box-office ceiling once again. Jailer 2 has reportedly crossed Rs 700 crore worldwide during its theatrical run, according to Sacnilk, overtaking 2.0 to become the latest industry hit of Tamil cinema.
That number is not a one-film fluke. It is the newest chapter in a cycle that stretches back to the late 1990s: every time the trade begins to doubt his box-office pull, the next major release gives the loudest possible answer.
A track record built on comebacks
The pattern starts with Padayappa. Directed by KS Ravikumar, the film cast Rajinikanth as a wealthy man who loses everything and rebuilds through hard work, while his clash with Ramya Krishnan’s Neelambari became one of Tamil cinema’s most famous confrontations. The film broke the record set by Kamal Haasan’s Indian and reportedly collected around Rs 60 crore worldwide, making it one of the biggest hits of the late 1990s.
After Baba disappointed in 2002, Chandramukhi arrived as the comeback. Directed by P. Vasu, it mixed horror, comedy and family drama, and reportedly ran for more than 800 days across its theatrical journey. It surpassed Padayappa to become Tamil cinema’s industry hit.
Shankar’s Sivaji: The Boss then pushed the ceiling higher. According to IMDb, it collected around Rs 150 crore worldwide and became the first Tamil film to cross the Rs 100-crore mark, beating Chandramukhi. The film’s stylish makeover, punch dialogues and the Mottai Boss transformation turned the character into a major theatrical attraction.
Enthiran continued the run. Rajinikanth played both scientist Vaseegaran and robot Chitti in the Shankar-directed science-fiction film. As per IMDb, it collected approximately Rs 290 crore, overtook Sivaji, and established a new standard for technology, visual effects and big budgets in Tamil cinema.
Why Jailer 2 matters now
The latest record is not just about the number. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar with music by Anirudh Ravichander, Jailer 2 brings back Muthuvel Pandian and has reportedly overtaken 2.0 to become the latest industry hit. The trade is already talking about a much bigger milestone.
Tamil Nadu Theatre Association President Tiruppur Subramanian told Behind Talkies that the film “may even reach Rs 1,000 crore,” adding that the box-office picture will become clearer after four to five weeks. That projection is ambitious, but the historical pattern makes it a talking point rather than a fantasy.
A watchlist for fans
If you want to see the arc in order, the five films map the evolution of the superstar’s commercial formula:
- Padayappa — the late-1990s record-setter and the Neelambari clash.
- Chandramukhi — the post-Baba comeback that ran for over 800 days.
- Sivaji: The Boss — the first Tamil film past the Rs 100-crore mark.
- Enthiran — the two-role VFX spectacle that set a new budget benchmark.
- Jailer 2 — the current Rs 700 crore-plus record holder.
For now, the clearest signal is the same as it has been across eras: Rajinikanth keeps moving the ceiling higher, and the next four to five weeks will show whether the Rs 1,000-crore call becomes another chapter in that run.
