Meethe Mein Kya Hai review: 3-star sweet family entertainer
Ritwik Bhowmik leads a Diwali family reunion that earns 3 stars: warm, funny in places and well performed, but a few conflicts feel forced.

Netflix’s low-key Diwali release Meethe Mein Kya Hai has arrived with almost no fanfare, but the first reviews suggest it may be the sort of film that finds its audience slowly. Bollywood Hungama’s critic handed the family entertainer a 3/5, praising its relatable warmth, genuine laughs and performances while noting that some emotional beats feel manufactured.
That combination makes it an easy, if imperfect, festival watch for anyone who wants a small story about family, grief and reconciliation without the noise of a big theatrical release.
A Diwali reunion with a secret
Directed by first-timer Radhika Bansal, the film follows Jai Agarwal, an architect who is still grieving his wife Tara, who died in a car accident two years earlier. He has distanced himself from his family and plans to skip the Diwali gathering at his nani’s Lucknow home — until his sister Sana reveals she has secretly married and needs him there when she introduces her husband, Karam.
What follows is a house full of relatives — Jai’s mother Amrita, father Ajay, mami Preeti, mama Rishab and their son Sid — plus a 13-year-old neighbour, Meera, played by Shivika Rishi. The review notes that Jai and Meera strike an unlikely friendship, and the early scenes where Karam meets the family deliver some of the film’s biggest laughs.
What works, and what wobbles
The review credits Bansal for maintaining a breezy, relatable tone in her debut. At just 119 minutes, the film reportedly moves without boredom, and much of the humour comes from ordinary family dynamics. Ritwik Bhowmik is called well suited to the part, while Rohini Hattangady and Shivika Rishi earn particular praise.
- Watch for: Ritwik Bhowmik’s restrained grieving, Rohini Hattangady’s nani, and Shivika Rishi as the scene-stealing neighbour.
- Keep expectations low for: Amit Trivedi’s songs — the review calls the background score better than the soundtrack.
- Be aware: Some conflicts, including the family’s push for nani to relocate to Jaipur, are described as forced.
That last point matters because the film’s charm is rooted in everyday realism, and the review says a few inserted moments — including spilling milk, wine and oil — feel childish and out of place.
Why it may still find an audience
The biggest challenge is discoverability. The film has arrived on Netflix with negligible hype, so it will depend on positive word of mouth. That is not a bad position for a Diwali family film: the theme of returning home, facing unspoken grief and meeting a family that is both difficult and loving is directly relevant to the season.
If you are in the mood for a short, warm watch and can forgive a little unevenness, Meethe Mein Kya Hai earns its three stars as a pleasant family entertainer. It is less a must-watch event than a comfortable option for a quiet evening.
