Baththa Hits Netflix Oct 29 After Rs 33 Crore Theatrical Run

Vijay Sethupathi's Baththa premieres on Netflix on October 29 with Hindi and other dubs after a Rs 33 crore run that won critics but not crowds.

Baththa hits Netflix on October 29 after a Rs 33 crore run

Vijay Sethupathi’s Baththa is trading the big screen for the small one. Netflix has confirmed that the Tamil drama will begin streaming on October 29, roughly a month after it arrived in cinemas on October 01.

A story critics loved, but theatres didn’t fill

Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, Baththa pairs Vijay Sethupathi with Sai Prithviraj and Lijomol Jose. The premise is a quiet what-if: a schoolboy accidentally locks a feared gangster inside a school toilet, then cannot bring himself to let the man out. What follows is less a thriller than a patient, coming-of-age look at fear, masculinity, vulnerability and redemption.

That unusual premise won warm reviews, but the film could not turn appreciation into a big box office run. As per Sacnilk figures reported by Filmfare, Baththa collected approximately Rs 33 crore gross in its theatrical window.

Why Netflix feels like a second chance

The OTT premiere gives Baththa something a crowded theatrical calendar could not: room to find the audience that prefers intimate dramas over spectacle. Netflix is also releasing the film in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, alongside the original Tamil version, so the story is no longer limited to Tamil-speaking viewers.

This is the kind of word-of-mouth title that often gets a second life on streaming. The film’s emotional register has drawn comparisons with C Prem Kumar’s Meiyazhagan, another Tamil film that prioritised warmth and human connection over scale.

There’s one more reason the digital release matters. Baththa has faced piracy concerns, with clips circulating widely across social media after its theatrical run. An official, well-dubbed Netflix release gives viewers an easy way to watch the film properly instead of settling for a grainy clip.

Before you press play

  • Premiere date: October 29 on Netflix.
  • Languages: Tamil original plus Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam dubs.
  • Cast: Vijay Sethupathi, Sai Prithviraj and Lijomol Jose lead; ensemble includes Ajay Ghosh, Santhy Balachandran and Arjun Chidambaram.
  • Music: Sai Abhyankkar’s ‘Magale’ became the film’s emotional touchstone and is still showing up in social media reels.
  • Box office: About Rs 33 crore gross, per Sacnilk figures reported by Filmfare.

What might actually happen on streaming

Nobody can promise that a Netflix run will turn Baththa into the hit theatres didn’t see. But the ingredients are there: a lead actor with cross-industry pull, a song already embedded in reels, a dubbed release that lowers the language barrier, and a story that rewards patience. For Hindi film fans who enjoy the quieter side of southern cinema, this is one to add to the watchlist on October 29.
