Why Yash’s Ravana Is Ramayana’s Biggest Talking Point

Early reactions to Ramayana: Rise of a Legend have put Yash's Ravana in focus. Can he be formidable without being glorified?

Yash's Ravana is already Ramayana's biggest talking point

Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: Rise of a Legend arrives in cinemas on November 5, but the most intriguing early conversation is not about Lord Ram. It is about the king of Lanka.

A recent Los Angeles screening for a select audience left reactions divided, yet one name kept surfacing: Yash. Several viewers singled out his Ravana, and that is notable for a film this size.

From Rocky Bhai to Ravana

Yash has spent years building a stardom rooted in swagger. His KGF character Rocky Bhai became a cultural phenomenon — long hair, beard, booming dialogue and a ruthless ambition that audiences loved to cheer. That energy carried his recent release, but the film itself stumbled at the box office and drew criticism for its writing.

Ramayana gives Yash a different kind of platform. Ravana is not a conventional villain, nor is he a hero in waiting. He is learned, powerful and devoted to Shiva, but his pride undoes him. That contradiction is why filmmakers keep returning to him, and why the role is harder than it looks.

The balancing act

The risk for the makers is straightforward: when a superstar plays Ravana, audiences may want to root for him. That would undercut the moral weight of Lord Ram’s eventual victory. The film has to make Ravana formidable without making him admirable.

Your actions, your karma, define you.

Yash has spoken about the role with care, using that line to explain how he looked at the character. It matters because it frames Ravana as someone with extraordinary abilities whose choices still lead to his fall.

His involvement as a co-producer adds another layer. He could have picked a more conventional hero, but instead chose a character whose defeat is built into the story. That is a clear signal about the kind of performer he wants to be.

What early viewers are saying

  • The Los Angeles reactions were mixed, but Yash’s Ravana earned praise from several viewers.
  • Yash and Ranbir Kapoor will not share the screen in Part One.
  • Ramayana: Rise of a Legend opens in cinemas on November 5.

The real test

The promotional material has already showcased Yash’s imposing look and elaborate costumes. But appearance alone will not be enough. Ravana has to carry anger, intellect, pride and the specific flaws that make his downfall feel earned. If Yash can hold all of that, the antagonist may well become the character audiences discuss long after the credits.

Everyone knows how the story ends. The more interesting question is whether Ravana becomes its most talked-about presence. For now, the early praise has only raised expectations.
