Bombay HC shields ₹4,000-cr Ramayana before Nov 5 release

Days before Ramayana: Rise of a Legend arrives in theatres, the Bombay High Court has given the film a pre-release legal shield. On Monday, Justice Madhav Jamdar granted an ad-interim injunction restraining unidentified entities and digital platforms from recording, hosting, or streaming the Nitesh Tiwari epic without authorisation.

The order comes just before the film’s November 5 release, after producer Godpower Media Private Limited told the court that two trailers from invite-only previews had been secretly recorded and circulated online.

What the court actually ordered

The relief is a dynamic injunction. Instead of protecting a fixed list of links, it allows Godpower to send written notice about offending URLs. Internet service providers and social media platforms must then immediately block access, disable, or take down those links and any mirror sites that pop up.

The court’s order covers a wide sweep of the production. The suit sought protection over:

  • the underlying script and characters
  • footage, lyrics, and recordings
  • trailers and any other film material circulating on digital networks

Google LLC and other global intermediaries reportedly did not object to the interim order and assured the court they would act quickly when notified of offending content.

Why the stakes are so high

According to what the court was told, Part I of the film was produced for about ₹2,000 crore, while the two parts carry a combined budget of roughly ₹4,000 crore. When an epic on that scale leaks early, the damage is not only box-office risk but also the dilution of a carefully planned reveal.

The production itself is one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious bets: Nitesh Tiwari directs, Namit Malhotra produces under DNEG and Prime Focus Studios, and Yash serves as co-producer. The cast includes Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, Yash as Ravana, and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman.

Justice Jamdar observed that the plaintiff had a “real and well-founded apprehension” that the film or parts of it would be uploaded, streamed, or communicated to the public on various platforms.

What fans should know before release day

For viewers, the order is mostly a backstage safeguard. The practical rule stays the same: watch official trailers and wait for the big-screen release. Mirror links are not only unauthorised; they are usually a low-quality and risky way to experience a film built for scale.

The interim protection will operate until the next hearing scheduled on December 16, giving the film a legal cushion through its opening window and beyond.
