Sanjay Gupta, 59, remembered at Bollywood prayer meet
A week after Sanjay Gupta's sudden death, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and other stars attended a private prayer meet in Mumbai.

A week after filmmaker Sanjay Gupta’s sudden death, Bollywood gathered for a quieter goodbye. A private prayer meet in Mumbai brought out Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and other members of the film fraternity to pay their respects and stand with his family.
A quiet, emotional gathering
A video from the service has begun circulating online. Abhishek and Aishwarya were seen in white, speaking with industry colleagues, while Shah Rukh Khan made a brief appearance, walking through in a beanie, jeans and a white tee. Milap Zaveri was visibly moved as he remembered the late filmmaker.
There is history here beyond the moment. Aishwarya had worked with Gupta on the 2015 action-thriller Jazbaa. Abhishek had also attended the director’s funeral. Shah Rukh Khan did not make a film with Gupta, but the two reportedly shared a professional and personal bond from their early days in the industry.
What happened to Sanjay Gupta
Gupta died on October 30, 2026 at age 59 after an accidental fall at his Versova residence in Mumbai. Police said he appeared to lose his balance in the kitchen and suffered a severe head injury; his family was asleep, and the incident was discovered the next morning. He was taken to Cooper Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
His last rites were performed at the Versova crematorium on October 31. His son Shivansh and daughter Dalai lit the funeral pyre.
Why his films still matter
Gupta built a reputation for stylised, gritty Hindi films. His credits include:
- Kaante
- Musafir
- Zinda
- Shootout at Wadala
- Jazbaa
- Kaabil
- Mumbai Saga
For fans who grew up on these films, the prayer meet is a reminder that the faces on screen are also a community. A week after the loss, the turnout said what tributes often cannot: the crew, the cast and the audience all share the same screen.
