Ramayana Part 2 shifts to Diwali 2028 as trilogy returns
Namit Malhotra confirms Ramayana Part 2 for Diwali 2028, adds a year to the finale, and says audience response may decide if the epic becomes a trilogy.

Ramayana fans, the wait for the grand finale just got a little longer—but it may also get bigger. Producer Namit Malhotra has confirmed that Ramayana: Part 2 will now open in theatres during Diwali 2028, moving from its earlier 2027 slot.
The finale gets an extra year
In an interview with E!, Malhotra said the extension was about giving the second part room to match the scale of the first. “We want to deliver the finale in the most grand way that it deserves,” he said. The producer added that the team did not want a rushed follow-up.
The first film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, arrived worldwide on November 5, 2026, in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
Why a trilogy is back on the table
The two-part structure had looked settled, but Malhotra said the final shape could still change. Audience reaction to Part 1 will play a major role in deciding whether the epic expands into a trilogy.
That makes the current release less of a closed chapter and more of a test: if the first instalment travels widely enough, the makers may find more room to explore the story.
Two cuts now, one cut next time
Malhotra also revealed that the team prepared two versions of Part 1 for different audiences. One was written specifically for English-speaking viewers, with changes in runtime and how the story is presented.
For the sequel, both Malhotra and Tiwari would prefer a single version. Whether that happens will depend on the feedback the first film earns across markets.
What Part 1 has already built
India Today’s review noted the film’s visual scale, pointing to a reported Rs 2,000 crore budget visible in its landscapes, architecture, weapons and celestial realms. The Pushpak Vimaan battle scene has drawn praise, while some viewers felt the spectacle occasionally overshadowed the emotional beats.
The cast brings together:
- Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama
- Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita
- Yash as Ravana
- Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman
- Ravi Dubey as Lakshman
Supporting players include Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Lara Dutta as Queen Kaikeyi, Arun Govil as King Dashrath and Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari. The music comes from Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman.
For audiences, the Diwali 2028 date is now the event to watch—and Part 1’s performance will decide just how large the saga becomes.
