1 mm From Tragedy: Kareena Relives Night Saif Was Stabbed

Kareena Kapoor has given her most detailed account yet of the night Saif Ali Khan was stabbed at their Mumbai home—and it is far more frightening than the composed hospital exit the cameras saw.

Running onto the road

On this week’s episode of Koffee With Karan, Kareena told host Karan Johar that she ran out of the house in her night T-shirt, screaming for vehicles to stop, as Saif stood bleeding. There was no time to put on pyjamas; she just needed an autorickshaw.

“It was like a movie scene,” Kareena said.

Saif joked about the T-shirt, but the terror of the moment was clear. For fans who saw the elegant hospital exit, the confession reframes a tabloid moment as a family emergency. Their son Taimur, who was present, looked at his injured father in the lift and asked, “Abba, are you going to die?”

What happened that night

On 16 January 2025, around 2 am, an intruder entered the family home, reportedly demanded ₹1 crore, and got as far as Jeh’s room. Saif confronted the attacker to protect his younger son. He says he was stabbed about 10 times.

The injuries were deep and jagged, and a piece of the broken knife was lodged in his back. Saif said the weapon was so poor that it broke; had it been a better knife, the outcome could have been different. Kareena said one millimetre deeper would have been fatal.

The couple also addressed long-running questions about that night. Saif said no driver was present because the driver goes home to his family in the evening. Their son helped take him to hospital, along with Hari.

The family is still healing

Kareena said she could not sleep properly for nearly six months after the break-in. Saif has lost some sensation in his leg because the injury affected his spine. After the surgery, Ibrahim was in tears, and both he and Sara were deeply shaken.

Jeh later gave Saif a plastic sword and told him to use it if the thief returned. Saif credits the adrenaline of protecting his son and his action-film instincts for fighting back.

A composed exit, and the rumours

Saif’s elegant appearance while leaving hospital triggered online conspiracy theories. Kareena called them bizarre; Saif said he does not expect people to have no conspiracy theories. The fuller story is one of chaos, fear and a very close call.
