Salman Khan’s Maatrubhumi locks November 20 release date

Salman Khan's war drama Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace is set for a November 20 theatrical release after months of delays and a title change.

Salman Khan's Maatrubhumi to hit theatres on November 20

Salman Khan’s long-delayed war drama finally has a date with audiences. According to India Today, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace will open in theatres on November 20 after the producers secured the required approvals, including clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification. The date is expected to be made official at the film’s trailer launch in Mumbai today.

From Battle of Galwan to Maatrubhumi

The journey to this announcement has been anything but straightforward. The project was first announced as Battle of Galwan, inspired by the June 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh. The confrontation along the Line of Actual Control claimed the lives of 20 Indian soldiers and remains one of the most sensitive flashpoints between the two countries.

Initially scheduled for April, the film was postponed because certain portions had to be reshot. Around Independence Day there was speculation that it might arrive in theatres, but sources said Salman Khan wanted the story to be seen not only as a patriotic drama but as an emotional family story.

What changed

The title itself signals the rethink. The film has been renamed Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, and director Apoorva Lakhia has said it looks beyond a military confrontation. In his telling, the film explores “humanity, sacrifice and the emotional cost of war”. That positioning matters because it invites audiences in for grief and family, not just flag-waving.

  • Release date: November 20, after CBFC clearance
  • Earlier title: Battle of Galwan
  • Director: Apoorva Lakhia
  • Cast: Salman Khan as Colonel Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, with Chitrangda Singh, Mukesh Rishi, Ankur Bhatia, Zeyn Shaw and Abhilash Chaudhary; Vijay Raaz reportedly narrates the film
  • Why it was delayed: reshoots and sensitivities around the subject

Why it matters for Hindi film fans

Salman Khan has spent years as a mass-market star, but Maatrubhumi tests whether he can carry a real-life martyr story with restraint. The 2020 Galwan clash is still raw, and the shift from a battle name to “May War Rest in Peace” tells audiences they are getting an emotional drama as much as a war film.

The project also carries real-world scrutiny. Authors Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh, whose book India’s Most Fearless was initially associated with the film, have said the project evolved beyond their account of the Galwan clash, so the film now stands on its own narrative.

What to watch for

The trailer launch today is the first real test of that balance. Fans should look for whether the cut foregrounds the military action or the emotional arc, and how much of Galwan’s real events remain visible. If advance bookings open soon after, the scale will reveal whether this is being treated as a wide patriotic release or a more restrained drama.
