Aamir Khan quits hair dye, lets the grey show
Aamir Khan has stopped dyeing his hair, saying the upkeep grew boring. Subhash Ghai reads the grey as possible character prep—but no role is tied to it.

Aamir Khan has stepped away from the hair dye bottle. The actor, famous for transforming himself for roles over the years, says his current grey hair is not connected to any character. Speaking at a panel discussion at Whistling Woods International, he explained that the regular routine of colouring his hair had simply become boring.
A look that started as maintenance, not a movie
Khan’s decision is a personal one. He was tired of keeping up the upkeep. Aamir Khan’s changing looks have long functioned as a kind of teaser for Hindi film fans—a new stance, weight or hairstyle is rarely treated as ordinary. His natural grey will now sit alongside that history, even though he has separated it from the next character.
As videos from the discussion circulated on social media, filmmaker Subhash Ghai offered exactly that kind of reading. “You see, whenever you look at him with a different setup, you should understand that he’s studying a character,” Ghai said.
Why fans are reading the grey
Ghai’s comment ties the actor’s appearance to his process. Aamir Khan has long been known for shifting his body, hair and posture for performances, so it is understandable that a new look invites speculation. But this time, the actor has not announced any project attached to the grey hair.
Here is what the panel made clear:
- Aamir Khan has stopped dyeing his hair and is keeping his natural grey.
- The decision is not for a role; the colouring routine became boring.
- Subhash Ghai sees Aamir’s changing looks as possible character study.
Where Aamir Khan stands in his filmography
On screen, Khan was last seen in the feel-good film Sitaare Zameen Par, which earned good reviews. He also teamed up with Rajinikanth in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie, though the film received mixed reviews; its songs by Anirudh Ravichander were a bright spot.
For now, the grey hair remains a personal choice rather than a film announcement. If Aamir Khan walks out with a sharper change next, fans may reasonably assume a new character is close. Until then, the only role the grey is playing is Aamir being comfortable on his own terms.
