Bengaluru Techie Arrested Over ₹5 Crore Extortion Threat

Mumbai Police traced a Bengaluru software graduate after a fake Bishnoi extortion attempt demanding ₹5 crore from Tusshar Kapoor and crores from Ayushmann.

₹5 Crore Extortion Bluff Ends in Bengaluru Arrest

Mumbai Police have arrested a Bengaluru software graduate who allegedly posed as an operative of the Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate and sent extortion voice notes to two Bollywood actors. The accused, referred to by the surname Mishra in early reports, was traced across the country after a digital trail led Crime Branch officers to his Bengaluru address.

The extortion attempt

According to police, the accused exploited the anxiety that followed the recent firing outside Tiger Shroff’s vehicle in Juhu, passing himself off as an active member of the dreaded Bishnoi syndicate. He is alleged to have reached prominent actors through private Instagram messages and voice notes.

In Tusshar Kapoor’s case, the sender used the name “Harry Boxer” and demanded ₹5 crore. Ayushmann Khurrana received similar extortion audio messages demanding crores, investigators said.

How the police cracked it

The bluff unravelled quickly. Forensic audio analysis and cyber tracing of telephony IP gateways – digital handoffs that route voice and calls over the internet and leave traces for investigators – led the Crime Branch to the accused in Bengaluru.

Officers stressed that despite the gangland name being used to create panic, preliminary scrutiny found no actual connection between Mishra and the Bishnoi syndicate. In their telling, this was an opportunist trying to monetise Bollywood’s security fears.

  • The accused: a Bengaluru software graduate, identified by the surname Mishra.
  • The pose: an active Lawrence Bishnoi operative.
  • The method: private Instagram messages and voice notes.
  • The demand: ₹5 crore from Tusshar Kapoor, with similar crores demanded from Ayushmann.
  • The finding: no actual links to the Bishnoi syndicate so far.

Why it matters

The arrest is a moment of relief for an industry already dealing with fortified security, bulletproof vehicles and cancelled public appearances. With copycat extortionists trying to weaponise real gangland tensions, the Mumbai Police’s quick crackdown sends a warning that digital disguises will not hold.

Further interrogation is continuing to establish whether anyone else was involved in the scheme.
