Delhi HC Seeks Salman Khan Reply in Kala Hiran Jurisdiction Plea

A Delhi High Court notice asks Salman Khan to respond as Kala Hiran producer Amit Jani argues the actor's release-blocking suit belongs outside Delhi.

Salman's Kala Hiran Suit Faces Delhi Jurisdiction Test

The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to Salman Khan after producer Amit Jani asked the court to send back the actor’s suit against Kala Hiran – The Battle For Legacy, arguing that Delhi is not the right place to hear the dispute.

Justice Tejas Karia has sought Khan’s response on an application filed under Order VII Rule 10 read with Section 151 of the Code of Civil Procedure. The notice is procedural: it does not decide whether the Delhi High Court has jurisdiction, only that the producer’s challenge deserves a hearing.

Why Jani says Delhi is the wrong venue

In the application, Jani has argued that neither side has a qualifying Delhi connection. According to the producer, Khan resides in Mumbai, while the defendants reside or carry on business in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Mere availability of the film’s teasers, posters and other promotional material across India, including Delhi, should not be enough to establish territorial jurisdiction, he has submitted.

  • Khan’s suit seeks to restrain the film’s release over personality and publicity rights.
  • Jani contends the promotional campaign did not specifically target Delhi audiences or cause distinct injury in the capital.
  • He has also opposed an injunction, calling it an “extraordinary remedy” against a completed film.

What has already happened in this dispute

This is not the first legal step. In July 2026, the Delhi High Court directed the removal of links to the film’s teaser and related promotional material after Khan objected that the content contained identifiable references to him. In September, the producer’s side told the court the film was not in a releasable state because it had not yet received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification.

Jani has also filed another application seeking a stay on Khan’s suit, arguing that substantially the same dispute is already pending in an earlier proceeding. The court issued notice on that application earlier in the same week.

What this means for the film and its fans

For now, the outcome is uncertain. The court has not finally decided either the jurisdiction question or the stay. If the venue challenge succeeds, the release battle could move to another court before the personality-rights claims are examined on merits.

The film, written by Amit Jani and directed by Bharat S Shrinate, is stated to draw inspiration from the 1998 blackbuck poaching case involving Khan. Its listed cast includes Nikunj Aggarwal, Rishabh Arora, Rajesh Dahiya, Ram Gangwar, Naresh Gosain and Prakash Joshi. The project remains caught between the legal dispute and the certification process.

Salman’s slate beyond the courtroom

Khan’s upcoming titles include Maatrubhumi: May War Rest In Peace, directed by Apoorva Lakhia and inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash; it remains in post-production as of October 2026. He is also reportedly attached to an action drama tentatively called SVC63, directed by Vamshi Paidipally and produced by Dil Raju, and is hosting Bigg Boss 20.
