IMA Seeks Review of Sunny Deol’s Suryaa Before Release

The Indian Medical Association has asked for an urgent review of Sunny Deol's Suryaa, citing depictions of corruption and violence against doctors ahead of its Nov 20 release.

IMA seeks urgent review of Sunny Deol's Suryaa

Sunny Deol’s upcoming film Suryaa – Ant Se Aarambh Tak is facing formal objections from the Indian Medical Association just weeks before its scheduled theatrical release. The association has written to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw asking for an urgent review of the film.

The objection follows the teaser that dropped on Monday, which also marked Sunny Deol’s birthday. The medical body is concerned about how the film presents the medical profession.

What the IMA’s letter says

In its letter, the IMA flagged three broad areas:

  • The depiction of corruption in healthcare and alleged misconduct by medical professionals.
  • Scenes showing attacks on doctors, nursing staff and hospital personnel.
  • The risk that the film will suggest such wrongdoing is common across the entire medical community.

The association has asked for an impartial review and for suitable action if it is justified under the law. It argues that individual misconduct should be investigated and punished, but that the reputation of honest and committed doctors should not suffer as a result.

Why violence against doctors is the bigger worry

The IMA is particularly concerned about scenes of physical assault on healthcare professionals. If these are shown as heroic or justified, it argues, violence against those who save lives may begin to feel normal.

Doctors and hospital staff already face safety and security challenges, the association noted. Content that appears to glorify such attacks could encourage hostility and put healthcare workers at greater risk.

There is also a trust issue. The IMA warned that such portrayals could weaken public trust in the doctor-patient relationship by creating suspicion and hostility, which would harm the cooperation needed for proper treatment.

The line between punishing individuals and tarnishing a profession

The IMA made clear that it does not support corruption, unethical practices or professional misconduct. But it believes wrongdoing by individuals should be handled through legal and disciplinary routes, not applied to an entire profession.

The letter said, “India needs more dedicated and motivated doctors to meet the healthcare needs of its growing population.” Negative portrayals, the association added, could demoralise medical students, put off aspiring doctors and hurt the dignity of a profession built on years of hard work, sacrifice, compassion and service.

What happens between now and November 20

For film fans, the release date stays November 20 unless the review leads to a change. The teaser, as the makers describe it, opens with a deeply personal loss that leaves the central character scarred before pulling him into a disturbing chain of events linked to the medical system.

The cast also includes Ravi Kishan, Pragya Jaiswal, Tanushree Chakraborty, Manish Wadhwa, Tinu Anand, Virti Vaghani, Jisshu Sengupta, Khalid Siddiqui, Anoop Trivedi and Rohit Tiwari.
