Imran Khan’s Mumbai protest ignites a Jaane Tu hero revival
Fans are calling Imran Khan's Mumbai protest detention a real-life Jaane Tu moment. Here is what happened and why the internet is celebrating the actor.

Imran Khan has been away from leading roles for years, but over the weekend he became the most talked-about face in Bollywood for a reason that has nothing to do with a trailer or a box-office number. The actor joined a protest in Mumbai, was detained by police, and gave a generation of fans a new reason to bring back their favourite gentle hero.
The detention that started it
On Saturday, October 10, Imran joined the anti-Chief Election Commissioner demonstration at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan with his partner, actor Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayn Marie Khan. The protest supported the Cockroach Janata Party’s call for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, amid concerns around electoral processes and voter-roll revisions.
Mumbai Police prevented the gathering at the venue. Imran, Lekha and Zayn were among those detained around 5:30 pm and released later that evening, around 9 pm. A photo from the police vehicle became the moment’s calling card, with Imran captioning it, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”
Why fans keep saying Jaane Tu
For an online audience that grew up watching Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, the images landed with full emotional force. Imran’s debut character, Jai Singh Rathore, was a soft-spoken hero from a Rajput family who disliked violence and was teased for being too gentle. The film’s joke was that he only became the much-memed “Ranjhore ka Rathore” when he finally decided to stand up for what mattered to him.
Nearly two decades later, fans are borrowing that arc for real life. Social media filled up with “Ranjhore ka Rathore returns” energy, along with jokes that the rom-com boy came back and chose chaos and that audiences are so back. The enthusiasm is not about a film announcement; it is about seeing a star show up without red-carpet packaging.
In his own words
Speaking to the media, Imran said he was not there on behalf of a political party or an organisation, and that he was present “as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city”. He added that he wanted to understand why freedom of movement was being restricted and why voices were being suppressed.
Lekha and Zayn documented the experience on their social feeds, including a video from inside the police vehicle and later posts after the group was released. Lekha said the three were not allowed to book a cab and had to walk home; Zayn posted clips that showed injury marks on her arms, fingers and legs.
Where this fits in his comeback
The conversation arrives while Imran is gradually returning to the screen.
- He became a household name with Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na in 2008.
- He followed it with I Hate Luv Storys, Delhi Belly, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu.
- His return includes a cameo in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos and the upcoming romantic comedy Adhure Hum Adure Tum with Bhumi Pednekar and Gurfateh Pirzada.
The latter is expected to mark his return to a leading role after a decade-long break. But for now, the internet is less focused on his next character and more on the stand he took off-screen.
