Karan Johar Wants Life Partner, Says Marriage May Not Be Possible
Karan Johar opens up on Koffee With Karan 9 about wanting a life partner and equal co-parent for twins Yash and Roohi, but says marriage may not be possible.

On the October 21, 2026 episode of Koffee With Karan 9, filmmaker Karan Johar made a rare personal admission: he is ready for love and companionship, even if the traditional label of marriage feels out of reach.
The moment came when Vijay Deverakonda, sitting beside Rashmika Mandanna on the famous couch, asked Karan what he wanted to manifest. After Vijay spoke about holding Rashmika’s hand and keeping her safe, he turned the question back to Karan.
Not a wedding, but a partnership
Karan put it simply: “I would like to have a partner. I would like to be in a relationship.” He added that marriage “technically may not be a possibility,” then described what he actually wants.
His wish had little to do with a ceremony. Instead, he spoke about sharing the small moments and the milestones, and about finding someone who could be an equal parent to his twins, Yash and Roohi, who are now ten.
- Share the “nothings” of daily life and the “somethings” worth celebrating
- Be an equal parent to Yash and Roohi, now ten
- Feel loved, respected and complete without a wedding as the goal
Vijay responded with a playful blessing, asking the “old gods and the new and the coffee gods and the couch gods” to make it happen. Karan said the prayer “felt real.”
Why the wish resonates beyond the couch
Karan has spent years at the centre of Bollywood, both as a filmmaker and as the host who gets others to open up. Here, the interviewer became the one thinking aloud about family, loneliness and the shape of a modern partnership.
His framing matters: he separated the idea of a partner from the institution of marriage. That distinction can make conversations about single parenting and companionship outside marriage feel less forbidden in a culture that still treats both cautiously. For Karan, a partner is not a status symbol but a second pair of hands, a witness to ordinary days and a co-parent.
Focus on family and films
The personal wish arrives while his professional slate stays busy. Under Dharma Productions, Karan’s upcoming projects include Udta Teer with Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan, and Kartik Aaryan’s Naagzilla.
For now, the couch wish is the story. It is specific, a little vulnerable, and framed around what Karan wants his children to experience: a parent who is fully present, not a title that looks right on paper.
