Raj Babbar remembers Smita Patil on her 71st birth anniversary

Raj Babbar marked Smita Patil's 71st birth anniversary with an Instagram tribute to her rare sensitivity, artistry, and the legacy she left behind.

Raj Babbar remembers Smita Patil on her 71st birth anniversary

On what would have been her 71st birthday, Raj Babbar looked back at Smita Patil with a tribute that was as much about her craft as it was about the person he lost. The veteran actor-politician shared a photograph of the late star on Instagram on Saturday and, in his own words, praised an artist he says brought rare sensitivity to every role she touched.

A note filled with admiration and loss

In the caption, Babbar wrote that Smita’s journey was “tragically brief” but that her artistry left an “indelible imprint.” The line that stands out most, though, is the way he described her craft: “She didn’t merely portray characters – she breathed life into their very souls.”

He ended by saying that while artists leave when they are called, Smita left a part of herself in every heart she touched.

The short road from first meeting to goodbye

  • 1982: Raj Babbar and Smita Patil meet on the set of Bheegi Palkein.
  • 28 November 1986: Their son, Prateik, is born.
  • 13 December 1986: Smita dies at 31 from post-childbirth complications.
  • Prateik: He is raised in Mumbai by his maternal grandparents.

Her last screen appearance

Among Smita’s final screen appearances was Galiyon Ka Badshah, directed by Sher Jung Singh. The film had a large cast including Raaj Kumar, Hema Malini, Mithun Chakraborty, Poonam Dhillon, Aruna Irani, Ranjeet, Danny Denzongpa, Om Shivpuri and Iftekhar. Although it was shot and completed years earlier, its release was delayed, and it became the last Smita Patil film to reach audiences after she passed away in 1986.

Why the tribute still matters

Saturday’s post is the kind of public remembering that Bollywood rarely pauses for, but it matters because it restores a face and a filmography to younger viewers. Smita Patil’s career was brief by any measure, and the tragedy of her death at 31 often overshadows the work itself. Babbar’s words recentre the conversation on what she actually did: she created characters with soul, and that is why the mention of her birth anniversary still makes headlines.

For a generation that knows Smita Patil only as a name, the Instagram note opens a door. It points to the qualities that made her work endure: a sensitivity that made characters feel lived-in, and a presence that still gets discussed decades later. Babbar’s own recent work, including the 2024 film Ek Kori Prem Katha, keeps him in front of audiences, but this post is a reminder of the personal history behind the public figure.

Fans who want to understand that legacy can start with Bheegi Palkein, the film where the couple met, and move to Galiyon Ka Badshah, the delayed release that became her farewell.
