Rajpal Yadav names next film Solah Sawan Jhel Ke in SC

Rajpal Yadav has spent years in a cheque-bounce dispute, but on Wednesday the actor gave the Supreme Court a lighter moment — and, in his telling, a film title. Appearing before Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Yadav opened up about the financial and professional damage he says he has lived with since the early 2010s.

What the actor told the court

When CJI Surya Kant asked whether he was working on anything new, Yadav greeted him and turned the question into a summary of a long legal and financial battle. He said he has acted in around 250 films and claimed losses of around ₹250 crore over the past 13 years.

The actor said ₹17 crore of his own money was lost in the 2012 release Ata Pata Laapata. He called the dispute a Merchant of Venice wala case, saying the ₹5 crore at the centre of it had swallowed up a much larger sum. By his account, the total involved was ₹22 crore, and the original amount had kept him from earning since 2013.

  • Around 250 films: the career count Yadav cited in court.
  • ₹250 crore: losses he says he suffered over 13 years.
  • ₹17 crore: the amount he says went down in Ata Pata Laapata.
  • 1,200 theatres: the release plan he says never materialised for the film.
  • ₹5 crore to ₹22 crore: the dispute amount and the larger loss he claims.

The Supreme Court accepts a payment plan

The bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana accepted Yadav’s proposal to sell ancestral property to clear dues. The court noted that the actor had arranged to pay ₹2 crore immediately through demand drafts.

Yadav submitted drafts worth ₹1.15 crore, while the remaining ₹85 lakh is to be paid by a prospective buyer of his property by October 12. The court is expected to decide a schedule for the rest of the payment.

A title from sixteen monsoons

The hearing took a lighter turn when the CJI told Yadav to make a good film, entertain people again and rebuild his image — adding that the court had lawyers who could act. Yadav replied that he had already thought of a title for everything that happened between 2010 and 2026: Solah Sawan Jhel Ke, which loosely means having endured sixteen monsoons.

This is not just another court date. Rajpal Yadav is a familiar comic face whose small-town roles made him a fixture, and he told the court that the events of the past 16 years had affected his branding and reputation. For fans, the interesting part is that he is now framing that real legal ordeal as possible film material.

Whether the project actually goes into production is not yet clear, but the title is one more sign that Yadav wants the next chapter to be on screen.
