Ramayana unveils Kaikeyi and Manthara ahead of Diwali 2026

The two-part Ramayana reveals Lara Dutta as Queen Kaikeyi and Sheeba Chadha as Manthara, framing the epic's exile twist before its Diwali 2026 release.

Ramayana unveils Kaikeyi and Manthara ahead of Diwali 2026

The makers of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana have unveiled two new character posters that bring the epic’s emotional trigger into focus. Lara Dutta is Queen Kaikeyi, and Sheeba Chadha is Manthara, the adviser whose whispers push the queen toward the wishes that alter the story.

The posters do more than introduce faces. They point to the turn that sends Lord Rama into exile, with Kaikeyi’s two wishes and Manthara’s influence placed front and centre. In the images, Dutta appears in ornate traditional clothing and jewellery that signal her royal status, while Chadha is seen holding a staff, a visual that sets her apart as a very different kind of palace presence.

Why Kaikeyi and Manthara matter

Every Ramayana adaptation stands or falls on how it handles the palace intrigue. Kaikeyi is not a simple villain; she is a queen and a mother whose choices unravel a family, and Manthara is the counsellor who turns loyalty into manipulation. The makers’ caption calls the outcome “a kingdom’s darkest hour.”

These reveals follow the earlier introduction of Arun Govil as King Dashrath. Govil is a piece of casting that carries its own significance: generations of viewers know him as Lord Ram from television, and now he returns as the king of Ayodhya in the same story world.

The cast and the calendar

The two-part project is assembling a pan-Indian ensemble. The key names confirmed so far are:

  • Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama
  • Sai Pallavi as Sita
  • Yash as Ravana
  • Sunny Deol as Hanuman
  • Ravi Dubey as Lakshman
  • Lara Dutta as Queen Kaikeyi
  • Sheeba Chadha as Manthara
  • Arun Govil as King Dashrath

Part 1 is scheduled for a worldwide release in Diwali 2026, with Part 2 following in Diwali 2027. The film will release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam across India, backed by Prime Focus Studios, the 8-time Oscar-winning DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.

What to make of the rollout

The marketing is treating each casting as a chapter rather than simply a name drop. By linking Kaikeyi and Manthara to the story’s turning point, the team is giving fans a reason to revisit the source material and debate how Tiwari will balance spectacle with the emotional logic of the exile.

For Hindi film fans, the real draw is whether the new Ramayana can carry the weight of a story India knows deeply. The casting of Lara Dutta and Sheeba Chadha suggests the film wants performers who can make palace drama feel as urgent as battle scenes.
