20 Rekha Films That Built Bollywood’s Ultimate Diva

From Sawan Bhadon's box-office breakout to Umrao Jaan and Khoon Bhari Maang, Filmfare's birthday list maps 20 films that made Rekha an icon.

20 Rekha films that built an icon

Rekha’s filmography is often reduced to a few famous moments: the silk sarees of Silsila, the poetry of Umrao Jaan, the revenge of Khoon Bhari Maang. But a birthday special from Filmfare maps a longer, more useful story — a performer who kept renegotiating what a leading woman could do in Hindi cinema.

The breakthrough that almost didn’t happen

Before Sawan Bhadon (1970), Rekha struggled to get mainstream roles and was chased by B-grade cinema. Mohan Sehgal’s film changed that: it scored big at the box office and led to a dozen more signings. The debut matters because it frames the rest of the career as a long comeback from being underestimated.

1981 was a masterclass in range

Filmfare’s birthday list makes one thing clear: Rekha’s 1981 alone could be another actor’s entire filmography. Silsila cast her as Chandni, the lost love; Baseraa as Poornima, a sister who has to step into her sibling’s life; Ek Hi Bhool as Sadhana, a woman who raises a child alone after divorce; Kalyug as a modern-day Draupadi-like anchor; and Umrao Jaan as a courtesan and poetess. That is not versatility by accident.

  • Umrao Jaan (1981): Amiran is sold to a brothel and becomes a renowned courtesan and poetess; Rekha uses grace and subtlety instead of melodrama.
  • Ijaazat (1987): as Sadhna, she plays a wife in a marriage that never escapes an old love; Gulzar’s screenplay leaves much unsaid.
  • Khoon Bhari Maang (1988): a widow survives an attempt on her life, returns as model Jyoti, and takes revenge in a full masala package.

Glamour was a tool, not a trap

Silsila made Chandni an image of silk and longing. But the list argues Rekha could also strip the glamour away. In Ghar (1978) she played a rape survivor without the star armour. In Utsav (1984), she set a new bar for boldness as the courtesan Vasantsena. In Lajja (2001), she underplayed Ramdulaari so much that her shifts between rock-like strength and vulnerability carried the part. Filmfare notes that Lajja showed “class is indeed permanent.”

What fans can take from the list

Most Rekha retrospectives start and end with Umrao Jaan and Silsila. This one is useful because it insists on the less celebrated titles too: Jeevan Dhara (1982) as sole breadwinner Sangeeta; Pyaar Ki Jeet (1987) as Soni, an abducted village girl who is disowned; Ijaazat (1987) as the quiet, layered Sadhna. The arc is a reminder: a star becomes an actor by taking roles that don’t always flatter the image.

For anyone building a Rekha watchlist, start with the 1981 run, then add Ijaazat and Lajja for the later restraint.
