How a 5 AM Flight Took Shriya Saran From a Wedding to RRR
Shriya Saran recalls leaving a cousin's Jaipur wedding after one call, flying to Hyderabad at 5 AM, and landing a cameo in SS Rajamouli's RRR.

When a filmmaker like SS Rajamouli calls, the answer usually has to be yes—even if you are in the middle of a family wedding. Shriya Saran recently recalled doing exactly that when the chance to audition for RRR arrived while she was attending her cousin’s wedding in Jaipur.
A call, a flight, and very little sleep
Speaking to SCREEN, Saran said she got a call asking if she could come the next day. She stepped away from the celebrations, caught a 5 AM flight to Hyderabad and did not sleep all night. She was told it would just be a reading, and perhaps a look test, before shooting began a day later. When she arrived, the plan moved faster: “Okay, fine, now let’s come and shoot,” she remembered with a laugh.
In RRR, Saran played Ajay Devgn’s wife in the flashback portions. It was her second project with Rajamouli after the 2005 film Chatrapathi, which starred Prabhas.
Why the story struck a chord
This is not just a fun behind-the-scenes memory. It shows how suddenly opportunities can arrive, and what actors are willing to rearrange when a director they trust reaches out. For fans, it adds texture to a film that was already full of grand, emotional storytelling.
Key details from Saran’s account:
- She was at a cousin’s wedding in Jaipur when the audition call came.
- She flew to Hyderabad on a 5 AM flight without sleeping.
- The reading turned into shooting right away.
- RRR was her second film with SS Rajamouli, after Chatrapathi.
Lunch on the sets
Saran also shared a warm memory of Rajamouli’s working style: everyone on set sits down together for lunch. Rajamouli’s wife, Rama ma’am, brings homemade food, and the team discusses scenes and films that inspire them. It is a reminder of the collaborative atmosphere behind one of Indian cinema’s biggest directors.
What’s next for fans
Shriya Saran is currently in theatres with Drishyam 3: The Conclusion. The film has crossed ₹400 crore, so there is more than one reason to catch her on screen.
