SRK’s King locks Rs 665 crore pre-release deals

Shah Rukh Khan's King has reportedly locked Rs 665 crore in pre-release deals. Here's the break-up and why the theatrical run still has to deliver.

King locks Rs 665 crore in pre-release deals

Shah Rukh Khan’s King has reportedly locked around Rs 665 crore in pre-release business before a single ticket has been sold. The number, first reported by Pinkvilla and Moneycontrol, puts the Siddharth Anand-directed action film among the biggest commercial ventures in recent Hindi cinema.

Where the Rs 665 crore sits

The reported figure is not one cheque. It is the sum of several rights deals that producers strike before release:

  • Domestic theatrical distribution: Rs 250 crore, with Pen Marudhar
  • International theatrical distribution: Rs 175 crore, with Phars Films
  • Digital streaming: Rs 150 crore, with Netflix
  • Music rights: Rs 65 crore
  • Satellite rights: Rs 25 crore

Add those up and the reported pre-release business comes to Rs 665 crore. Pinkvilla described the overseas deal as the “highest-ever overseas minimum guarantee” for an Indian film.

A minimum guarantee is a distribution advance: the overseas buyer pays a fixed sum upfront and then keeps the territory’s collections until it recovers that amount. Calling it the highest-ever for an Indian film says a lot about how strongly international markets are pricing in Shah Rukh Khan’s pull.

Pre-release money is not box office

The most important distinction for fans is this: a rights deal is committed revenue for the producers, not money collected at the ticket window. A distributor or streamer pays an advance based on what it believes the film will earn.

That is why the Netflix clause matters. Moneycontrol reported that the Rs 150 crore streaming agreement includes a clause linked to the film’s theatrical performance, so the final value could change depending on how King performs in cinemas.

The Jawan benchmark

Shah Rukh Khan’s last big-screen action release Jawan, directed by Atlee, gave an early sign of his box-office pull. According to Sacnilk, Jawan sold more than 1.57 million tickets across 20,107 shows and recorded an all-India advance-booking gross of Rs 40.75 crore before its September 7, 2023 release. Worldwide advance collections crossed Rs 51.17 crore.

Reports suggest King is expected to go much higher. But a Rs 665 crore pre-release bundle also means the theatrical run has to justify the price the rights buyers have already paid. For viewers, none of this changes the film. For the industry, it moves King from “big release” to “high-stakes test”.
